In order to visit the archaic fortified granary of Ida On Zekri in Tasguent, an automobile with high clearance is sufficient during the dry season. After it has rained, however, it is better to charter a Land-Rover taxi in Tafraoute.
First drive up the S 509 to Tizi Mlil and, beyond the head of the pass, turn in the direction of Igherm onto the CT 7040, which is asphalted at the start, following the main ridge of the Anti-Atlas through the semi-arid mountain landscape eastward. Having passed the village Ait Abdallah, do not continue straight ahead when you reach the douar Tiguermine. Instead, 37 km (22 mi) after the fork from the S 509, turn towards the north and follow CT 7040 in the direction of Taroudant. After about 7 km (4 mi), a trail to the agadir Tasguent (1,500 m/4,800 ft) branches off at Douar Alma. Reckon with at least six full hours for the excursion.
The actual agadir of Tasguent lies just before the village of the same name in a small side valley and is among the finest intact fortified granaries in all of Morocco. It stands on a table mountain and is a number of stories high. The entire edifice is made of natural stones without connective clay and the storage rooms are grouped around three inner courts. At the entrance of the agadir there is a watchman (amin), who opens the mighty door with his wooden notched key when given a good tip. He is appointed to this post of confidence by the villagers, who still store their provisions there today, and is actually only allowed to let in people he knows well. The storage cells of the individual farmer families are built above each other to a height of up to seven stories. All of the rooms have their own wooden doors, often decorated with magic fertility symbols, bolted with carved drop-pin locks. Access is possible over large stone slabs sunk into the walls which follow each other in a sequence similar to that of stairs.
Not only are grain, olive and argan oils, legumes and dried fruit stored here in the storehouse fortress of Tasguent; political meetings of the village council (jemaa al amma), the head of which is the village elder (amghrar), also take place here. In times of war, the fortress served the villagers as a refuge. Since the agadir of Tasguent also has a mosque and includes the burial sites of several holy men and women (mrabtin), it is considered to be a sacred place.
