The small seaport of Asilah, which has an eventful history behind it, lies along the Northern Atlantic Coast. Both the Phoenicians and the Romans knew how to appreciate the benefits of this natural harbor. The fortified walls surrounding the town also recall the long-gone days when Portuguese invaders occupied the place from 1471 until 1578. The coat of arms of Portugal's then king Alfonso V still hangs above Bab el Jebel gate.

The city's modern yachting harbor also attracts many visitors during the summer. The murals on the houses in the medina bear witness to the fact that many Moroccan artists have chosen to live in Asilah.
