Route P 21 runs south from Meski along the Oued Ziz, passing by the picturesque ksour El Jedid and Ait Amira. After 56 km (33 mi) it reaches Erfoud and the major oasis region of Tafilalt, where over 700,000 date palms flourish. The harvest in October is celebrated with a pleasant, colorful festival. Besides its small market, Erfoud has virtually no interesting sights to attract visitors, though it is a convenient starting point for excursions to the sand dunes of the Erg Chebbi because of its hotels and LandRover rental agencies.

It's best to head out in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat, past the east gate (Borj Est) on route CT 3461 (asphalted at first) heading south, passing a fossil site in the hammada (rocky desert) to the left of the road. In the Palaeozoic there was a warm sea with coral reefs at the site of this inhospitable desert. Approximately 400 million years ago it was the habitat of the elongated orthoceras and the spiral-shaped goniatite-forerunners of the modern squid. The most frequently discovered species of trilobite are the up to 15-cm long specimens of the genus phacops. The fossils are polished and commonly offered for sale individually, although they are also available in whole slabs suitable for use as table-tops. Work and opportunities to earn money are rare in Tafilalet, therefore the fossil merchants follow tourists' vehicles for kilometers on rickety bicycles trying to sell their wares at any cost, including limb!
