About 35 km (21 mi) southeast of Larache lies Ksar el Kebir, a town of considerable historic importance in the fertile Loukos Valley. It was exactly here, in 1578, that the young Portuguese king, Sebastian, fought the - for him - disastrous Battle of the Three Kings in which 25,000 soldiers lost their lives. The king's untimely death - he was drowned in the Loukos River whilst escaping caused a political crisis in Portugal, so weakening the country that it was easily annexed by Spain only two years later. The town of Ksar el Kebir, which surpassed Fes in importance during the 12th century, has an interesting medina with picturesque fondouks (merchants' inns).
