Tour Itinerary
Days 1-2: United States/Cape Town, South Africa
Arrive in Cape Town and transfer to your hotel, an urban sanctuary set in a lush garden estate in the heart of the city's cultural center. Spend the rest of the day at leisure.Mount Nelson Hotel
Day 3: Cape Town/Sossusvlei, Namibia
Journey by air from Cape Town to Walvis Bay, where you meet your charter flight to Sossusvlei Desert Reserve. Your lodge is set in the far northern part of the Namib Rand Nature Reserve, a vast area of more than 400,000 acres that lies between the endless dune fields of the Namib Desert and the jagged mountains of the escarpment. It is surrounded by rocky outcrops that form the foothills of the Nubib Mountains, which are visible to the east. A variety of different rock types occur in the area, creating spectacular formations with different textures and colors as far as the eye can see. Further south lie vast stretches of distinctive red sand dunes, extending for thousands of square miles into the heart of the Namib. Relax in preparation for tomorrow's excursion.Sossusvlei Desert Lodge B D
Day 4: Sossusvlei
Explore the famous dunes of Sossusvlei, some of the highest in the world — you may even choose to climb one of them yourself. Discover the Namib Rand Nature Reserve on scenic nature drives, concentrating on unique desert-adapted plants and wildlife, as well as the starkly beautiful desert landscapes. If you feel adventurous, venture out on the trails by ATV, led by an experienced guide who helps you navigate through the dunes and rocky outcrops. A dip in the lodge's pool is the perfect remedy for the afternoon heat. After dinner, a resident astronomer unlocks the secrets of the southern skies at the lodge observatory. End your night looking up into African stars through the skylight positioned above your king-size bed, the sounds of the desert filling the air around you.Sossusvlei Desert Lodge B L D
Day 5: Sossusvlei/Damaraland
Leave Sossusvlei on a scenic flight to your next picturesque destination. Soar over the dramatic sand dunes to the Atlantic Ocean, then head north up the coast over deserted mining camps and seal colonies, as well as the wreck of the 'Eduard Bohlen' at Conception Bay. Land briefly in Swakopmund and continue to your camp. Mowani Mountain Camp is characterized by its thatched dome-shaped structures which echo the shape of the granite boulders among which they are built. Mowani is taken from the word m'wane, meaning "Place of God," and it is here that you will find the true meaning of peace and tranquility. This area boasts magnificent desert scenery, fascinating geological formations, archaeological sites and a unique variety of desert fauna and flora. It is the southernmost roaming ground for the rare black rhino and desert elephant. Mowani Mountain Camp B L D
Day 6: Damaraland
Highlights today include a nature drive in search of the elusive desert elephant (seasonal), with a picnic lunch. You will also enjoy an excursion to Twyfelfontein in the afternoon. The true meaning and purpose of Twyfelfontein's famous rock art — both carvings (petroglyphs) and paintings (pictograms) — may never be known. Take a short walk through the site or explore at your leisure. Return to your camp to relax in the pool, enjoy the stunning scenery from the deck of your tent or hike through the magnificent mountain scenery.Mowani Mountain Camp B L D
