Few places can deliver the sights and sounds of everyone's "dream" Africa more than primeval Tanzania, home to famous Serengeti National Park - site of the great wildebeest migration. Hear the trumpeting of proud elephants… greet tribesmen in colorful native dress… listen to the screech of the fish eagle or see sunlight glistening off the arched backs of hippos lazing quietly in their watering holes - all from the heart of this untamed land, rich with natural and archaeological treasures.
This 12-day safari reveals the majesty of Tanzania's distinct regions where wildlife reigns amid spectacular settings - from the baobab-studded landscape of Tarangire and Lake Manyara national parks to the panoramic expanse of Ngorongoro Crater and the endless grasslands of the Serengeti.
In addition to your comfortable stays at three of Tanzania's premier lodges, you'll experience safari life under canvas at Tarangire Safari Lodge and Kirawira Camp Western Serengeti - both camps with private tent accommodations in the bush.

Day 2 - Arusha (Kilimanjaro Airport), Tanzania
Upon arrival, transfer to Serena Mountain Village Lodge, just outside Arusha - Tanzania's "Safari Town." Nestled amid the bougainvillea-laden grounds of a colonial coffee plantation overlooking wooded Lake Duluti, this quiet haven is an ideal stopover after your international flight. Relax in your comfortable safari-style room. Traditional favorites and international fare are available at the dining room/open-air bar.
Day 3 & 4 - Tarangire National Park
Travel overland to nearby Tarangire National Park. Prolific in its medley of species and splendid landscapes, Tarangire is home to the densest population of elephants in Tanzania. Directly along the traditional route of several migratory animals, this fabulous park reveals Africa with all its unscripted drama. Built atop a bluff along a lush, life-sustaining river - a favorite watering place that attracts impressive numbers and varieties of game - Tarangire Safari Lodge is the perfect base for safari exploration. You'll reach camp and have plenty of time to settle into your tent - complete with authentic safari ambience, the modern comfort of electric light, and en-suite bath with hot water - before embarking on the first of many planned game drives.! Witness stunning vignettes of nature, with herds roaming free unhindered by bars or fences. Several species abundant here - eland, fringe-eared oryx, lesser and greater kudu, and gerenuk - are not so easily seen in other parks. Tarangire is also home to some 2,500 resident elephants (herds of more than 200 have been seen from the lodge veranda) and 94 other mammal species, as well as the highest recorded number of breeding birds.! In between game drives, savor home-cooked safari cuisine in the thatched-roof dining room, visit the cozy lounge/bar, take a dip in the inviting pool, or peruse the Baobab Boutique. During your stay, also enjoy a welcome reception at the lodge and a special lecture by a local researcher who has studied the social structure and migration patterns of the park's elephants.
Day 5 - Ngorongoro Crater Lake Manyara National Park/Ngorongoro Crater
Depart early by safari cruiser for a game drive through Lake Manyara National Park. Though small by African standards - only 123 square miles - the park's diversity of habitats supports a varied wildlife population. During this morning's game drive, keep an eye out for blue monkeys and vervets, impalas, buffalo, elephants, zebras, wildebeests, hippos, and giraffes, as well as the park's famous (but very rare!) tree-climbing lions. After lunch at nearby Gibb's Farm - a private coffee plantation - your scenic drive continues, ascending from the Rift Valley. Arrive in time for a pleasant dinner at Ngorongoro Serena Lodge - your home-away-from-home for the next two nights. Perched high on the western rim of Ngorongoro Crater, the lodge is privy to some of Africa's most beautiful sunrises. Built from stone and molded into the contours of its surroundings, the Serena subtly blends with its natural setting.
Day 6 - Ngorongoro Crater
Cradled in one of East Africa's most spectacular game reserves, Ngorongoro Crater is a caldera (or sunken volcano) - stretching nearly 12 miles across, more than 2,000 feet deep, and covering 102 square miles - that rises to a height of 8,000 feet at the rim. Today, follow the road as it winds down the gentle slopes to see nature at its finest along the crater floor. Home to 20,000-30,000 animals at any given time, including the majestic black-maned lions and rare black rhinos, Ngorongoro boasts the highest concentration of wildlife in all of Africa. Following an alfresco brunch, served in this dramatic setting, continue with your fascinating drive through one of Africa's premier game-viewing haunts.
Day 7 - Olduvai Gorge/Serengeti National Park
After breakfast, depart for the Serengeti, marked by an expansive landscape of rocky outcroppings, woodlands, and rolling plains. The 5,790-square-mile park - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - supports 35 species of plains game, 500 bird species, and Tanzania's largest lion prides.
En route, visit a manyatta (or Masai village) for a glimpse of daily life among native Tanzanian tribesmen. Also stop at Olduvai Gorge, the site of rich fossil beds where, in 1959, an ancient skull of Zinjanthropus, now renamed Australopithecus boisei (an early humanlike species that lived nearly 1,750,000 years ago) was discovered by Dr. Mary Leakey. Due to its massive skull and large teeth, the find was nicknamed "Nutcracker Man."
This afternoon, continue your journey through the heart of the Seronera Valley, enjoying the sights and sounds of the wild. While in the Serengeti, enjoy two-night stays at two of Tanzania's premier safari properties. Situated high atop a hill with commanding views of the endless savanna, the beautiful Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge is elegant but unobtrusive. Modeled after a traditional African village, it features rondavel huts that house luxurious guest rooms with modern amenities.
At Kirawira Camp Western Serengeti - your home under canvas in the bush - enjoy a very luxurious safari lifestyle, as if reenacting a scene from Out of Africa. Your deluxe walk-through tent includes a personal valet, four-poster beds, handmade quilts, an en-suite Edwardian-style bath, and an inviting terrace that overlooks the Serengeti. Five-course meals are served on fine blue-and-white china.
Day 8-10 - Serengeti National Park
Serengeti - in Masai, the word itself means "endless plain," and throughout your stay, morning and afternoon game drives will showcase this fertile region. You will explore the vast open grasslands and woodlands, searching for elephants, giraffes, and plains game, among others. And, perhaps, even encounter a lion pride or two, as the Serengeti - renowned for its large population - is one of the best places to see them up close. Also discover the rich Ndutu plains, where the vast herds of wildebeests congregate during their annual migration between the Serengeti and Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. The wildebeests, as well as scores of zebras and gazelles, graze on the region's grasslands, attracting a wealth of predators. Both a festive sundowner reception and an exotic dinner at the heart of the bush promise to be real highlights of your Serengeti safari experience, while an informal lecture on cheetah research further rounds out your activities. For a completely different perspective, you will have the option of joining a hot-air balloon safari (at additional cost); champagne and breakfast on the open plain follow the flight over Africa's vast expanse.
Day 11 - Serengeti National Park/Arusha
Depart for U.S.A. (via Kilimanjaro Airport) Enjoy a final game drive early this morning, followed by breakfast at camp, before transferring to a nearby airstrip for the flight to Arusha. Upon arrival, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant then continue to Serena Mountain Village Lodge, where you can relax in your dayroom, which has been reserved until departure, or take advantage of an afternoon shopping shuttle. Later, your return flight to the United States departs from Arusha's Kilimanjaro Airport.
