Hong Kong/Chengdu
Fly to Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, an area renowned for its scenic beauty. This afternoon, visit the Wuhousi Temple, a monument to second-century military strategist Zhuge Liang, still revered for his wisdom today.

Chengdu
Visit the Panda Research Institute, one of the premier facilities in China fighting to preserve this endangered national icon. Follow this with a stop at the Sanxingdui Bronze Museum, which houses items excavated from a site believed to have been inhabited some 3,000 years ago. Proceed to the archaeological site of Jinsha, whose culture rose to prominence around 1000 BC. After dinner, attend a traditional bian lian performance by the Sichuan Opera, a distinctive Sichuan art form in which the performers' elaborate masks change with astonishing speed.

Fly to Chengdu and drive to Emei Shan, one of the four most sacred Buddhist mountains in China. The mountain draws visitors ranging from eager climbers to devout Buddhist pilgrims, who flock to the more than 70 shrines that dot the mountain slopes.

Discover the 230-foot-tall Leshan Giant Buddha, carved into the side of Lingyun Mountain. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this statue is so massive that 100 people can sit between its feet. Continue exploring this scenic area this afternoon.

Return to Chengdu. Time permitting, visit the cottage home of one of China's most famous poets, Du Fu (AD 712-770), before flying to Kunming, the capital of Yunnan.

Visit a flower market, followed by the Western Hills, a lovely park. Explore the ancient Golden Temple and the Dragon Gate (Longmen), a collection of Daoist caves and sculptures. This afternoon, fly to Lijiang, a region of remarkable beauty, with its snowy mountains and green valleys.

Visit Lijiang's Old Town, deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its history dates back 800 years to the time of Kublai Khan, founder of the Yuan Dynasty. Afterward, explore the Bai Sha village, once the capital of the Naxi kingdom, one of China's officially recognized ethnic groups.

Lijiang/Zhongdian (Shangri- La)
En route to Zhongdian, round the first bend in the Yangzi River and explore the town of Shigu (Stone Drum), a typical Naxi village. After lunch, stop at the magnificent Tiger Leaping Gorge. Following an authentic hot pot dinner this evening, Uttara Crees, an international ecotourism expert, talks about the area's culture and traditions.
