Day 1: Depart USA Set out on your India exploration.
Day 2: Arrive Delhi, India Welcome to India! Your representative drives you to the plush Oberoi Hotel, and assists with check-in. Located in the center of India’s vibrant capital city, the hotel reflects the spirit of Delhi in a harmonious blend of tradition and contemporary sophistication. The Oberoi (Premier Room)
Day 3: Delhi Your first day in India unfolds slowly with a leisurely breakfast. Meet your guide and set out on your exploration of one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. In Delhi, visit Bahai Temple, Humayun’s Tomb (1586) and the 72-meter-tall Qutab Minar, thought to be one of the most perfect towers in Persia. Travel the embassy area, past vintage government buildings, and Connaught Place, the main shopping district. Through the gates of the Old Delhi, you come to Jamma Mosque (1650), and the fabled Chandni Chowk, Moonlight Square, where throngs of shoppers and vendors meet in the oldest area of Delhi. The elegant Red Fort (1639-1648) was built by the builder of the Taj Mahal. Visit Raj Ghat and nearby ghats where Mahatma Gandhi and, later, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi were cremated. You are welcomed into the home of country manager this evening to meet his family, and sample India’s well known hospitality and traditional cuisine. Day 4: Delhi / Agra This morning, experience India’s modern freeways as you travel to Agra, the city of the Taj Mahal. Check-in at the Oberoi Amarvilas, where every room has an unhindered view of the Taj Mahal just 600 meters away. This world-class hotel boasts Mughal-inspired gardens, fountains, pools and pavilions that complement its classic architecture and recalls an era of emperors and princes. Continue on to massive Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the most important fort in India as it was home to the great Mughals, and the largest state treasury and mint. Day 5: Agra / Fatehpur Sikri / Jaipur Drive to Jaipur, stopping en route at the deserted Fatehpur Sikri, a Mughal capital city in the late 1500s. This perfectly preserved city was abandoned less than 20 years after its founding. In Jaipur, you are welcomed at one of the country’s premier hotels, the Oberoi Rajvilas. Set in 30 acres of orchards, gardens, decorated pools and fountains, the hotel recreates the magnificence of princely Rajasthan. Your tent is the epitome of luxury with a private pool in a fort setting. Venture out with your guide to explore the shops of Jaipur, where you see the process block making and block printing, as well as carpet weaving. But Jaipur is most noted for its jewelry, from chunky tribal jewelry to enameled gold and silver, to modern diamond pieces. Day 6: Jaipur Today you are immersed in the royal world of the maharajahs. Amber Fort, set on the dry, wrinkled Aravali Hills, is a superb example of the Raiput-style, medieval Hindu architecture. Approach this hilltop palace on a caparisoned, painted elephant. Pass through the ancient main gate where maharajas of Jaipur have entered for four hundred years. This is an architectural masterpiece with its mirror-studded alcoves, dazzling mosaics and water-cooled swings. Palace of theWinds is five stories of pink sandstone with semi-octagonal and delicately honeycombed windows overlooking the main street of the old city. Day 7: Jaipur / Udaipur Early this morning, fly to Udaipur, known for palaces, lakes and colorful bazaars. Glide across Pichola Lake as you approach the ethereal setting of your hotel, the Oberoi Udaivilas. Day 8: Ranakpur Udaipur is a cool oasis in the dry heart of Rajasthan. The huge city palace towers over the lake, and is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan. Next to the palace is Jagadish temple, a fine example of Indo-Aryan Art. Later, you venture on an excursion to Ranakpur Temple, built sometime between the 14th and 15th centuries. The temple, with its distinctive domes, turrets and cupolas rises majestically from the slope of a hill. Over 1444 marble pillars, carved in exquisite detail, support the temple. No two pillars are alike. Later, with your guide, discover Udaipur’s bustling lanes filled with artisans selling their wares – furniture carvers, puppet and toy makers, engravers, silver and goldsmiths. Day 9: Udaipur / Mumbai A morning flight takes you to Mumbai, formerly Bombay. You are whisked away to your lovely hotel overlooking the Arabia Sea. You have time to relax; before joining your guide for a look at this tropical and cosmopolitan city. Its weathered Victorian mansions and grand public buildings stand as a reminder of the days of the British Raj. Mumbai is vibrant, often aggressive, reflecting the affluence and energy of a city of 15 million. One of Mumbai’s landmarks is the Gateway to India, a stone archway, hastily erected to welcome England’s Queen Mary and King George V in 1911. Visit the terraced, hanging gardens, dating from the 1880s. The Prince of Wales Museum boasts a rich collection of antique miniature paintings as well as Nepalese and Tibetan art. Day 10: Mumbai On your second morning in Mumbai, you discover the famed island caves of Elephanta. A short boat ride takes you to the island famed for its great cave shrine to the Lord Shiva. It was excavated in the 6th century. The Portuguese named the island Elephanta after finding a huge carved elephant there. The temple spreads over 5,000 square meters. A flight of stairs with more than 100 steps leads to the top. Inside, a large pillared hall with rows of columns that appear to hold up the roof of the cave.
