This program introduces travelers to the “must-see” highlights of Laos, including the modern capital of Vientiane and the ancient northern capital of Luang Prabang; the itinerary can easily be added onto other touring in Southeast Asia for those who are interested in a short stopover in Laos. Begin with three nights in Luang Prabang: this magnificent World Heritage Site boasts countless mosaic-covered temples sprinkled along the banks of the Mekong River, and the quiet charm of the town makes it most visitors’ favorite. Rise early to observe the monks in their morning meal procession; you can participate by buying rice in a traditional basket and helping distribute it to the line of patient monks. That same day, head to the Pak Ou caves, where Buddha images have been carefully hidden in the limestone cliffs. On another day, take an excursion to Khouangsi Falls, where you will visit an Akha hill tribe village beneath the falls and enjoy a picnic lunch. From Luang Prabang, fly to the capital city of Vientiane for one night. Tour Vientiane’s temples, monuments, and markets before transferring to the airport for your afternoon onward flight.
