In the extremities of China, the landscape is beautiful yet rugged. In this land that was home to Genghis Khan, meet the nomads of Mongolia who remain true to their ancient traditions in their everyday lives.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1
You are met and transferred to your hotel in Beijing.

Day 2
Enjoy the highlights of Beijing, including Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven.

Day 3
Fly to Mongolia's capital, Ulaan Baatar, where you visit the Natural History Museum, renowned for its dinosaur bones and fossils from the Gobi Desert. Enjoy a traditional music and dance performance during dinner.

Day 4
Get your first taste of the Mongolian "Outback" when you fly to Dalanzadgad. Drive to Yolyn Am for a walk through a river gorge so deep and shaded that its floor is a permanent ice sheet. This evening, spend the night in a traditional ger (tent) camp.

Day 5
Drive across the red cliffs of Bayanzag to the scrubby plains of the northern Gobi Desert. Meet nomadic camel breeders and herdsmen as you travel across the desert to the ruins of the Ongiin Monastery.

Day 6
Reach the sweeping steppe land that frames the Orkhan River Valley, the cradle of Mongolian civilization. Drive through the grassy plains, stopping to visit with local nomad families.

Day 7
Explore the ruins of ancient Karakorum, once the capital of Genghis Khan's Mongolian empire and inspiration for Xanadu in Coleridge's poem "Kubla Khan." Continue with a visit to the Erdene Zuu Monastery. Built without a single nail, it was Mongolia's first great center of tantric Buddhism. In previous times, the grounds held more than 60 temples used for daily worship by 10,000 monks.

Day 8
Travel overland to Ulaan Baatar, stopping at the Khustain Nature Reserve to learn about the resurgence of the takhi (wild horse). Famous for their role in the empire-building conquests of Genghis Khan, by the 1960s, after years of hunting and livestock overgrazing, the takhi were nearly extinct until they were secured in the protective steppe of the reserve.

Day 9
Say "boyartai" to Mongolia as you depart on your flight for Beijing and the final night of your journey.

Day 10
Board your homebound flight.
