Continue [on an optional extension] to visit the most famous of all the temples on the plain of Angkor: Angkor Wat. The temple complex covers 81 hectares and is comparable in size to the Imperial Palace in Beijing. Its distinctive five towers are emblazoned on the Cambodian flag and the 12th century masterpiece is considered by art historians to be the prime example of classical Khmer art and architecture.
Tour Itinerary
Days 1-2
Arrive Hanoi. Walk and cyclo through the city, seeing sights both traditional and modern. Visit Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum and attend a performance of traditional Vietnamese water puppetry, Sofitel Metropole Hotel.
Day 3
Drive to Halong Bay. Cruise the Bay, visiting caves and islands. Lunch and dinner on board. Overnight on Halong Ginger or Jasmine deluxe junk.
Day 4
Return to Hanoi. Afternoon at leisure. Sofitel Metropole Hotel.
Day 5
Fly to Hue. Visit the Imperial Citadel, La Residence Hotel & Spa.
Day 6
Visit royal tombs of Tu Duc, Khai Dinh, cruise the Perfume River to Thien Mu Pagoda. Drive to Danang via the Marble Mountains, sightseeing en route, Nam Hai Resort.
Day 7
Scenic bike ride and lantern-making; walking tour of Hoi An, Nam Hai Resort.
Day 8
Day of leisure on China Beach, Nam Hai Resort.
Day 9
Fly to Ho Chi Minh City. Walking tour of downtown, museums, lunch at Quan An Ngon. Visit Chinatown and Ben Thanh Market. Dinner at On the Six, Park Hyatt Hotel.
Day 10
Drive to the Mekong Delta for private cruise; visit Cai Be floating market, lunch at a beautiful colonial villa. Dinner at Au Manoir de Khai, Park Hyatt Hotel.
Day 11
Drive to Cu Chi district, visit the underground tunnel complex. Drive to the Cao Dai Temple to attend the noon mass. Dine at Nam Kha, Park Hyatt Hotel.
Day 12
Morning markets and Tai Chi with locals, then ferry across the Saigon River to Thu Thiem; sample a traditional Vietnamese breakfast. Depart Vietnam or continue to Siem Reap, Cambodia, Raffles Grand Hotel D'Angkor.
Day 13
Visits to Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and enchanting Ta Prohm, Raffles Grand Hotel D'Angkor.
Day 14
Explore floating villages on the Tonle Sap Lake, a bird sanctuary and the old town. Depart Cambodia.
