Fly in fishing camps in Manitoba Canada for Walleye, Northern Pike, Arctic Lake Trout and Arctic Grayling and Northern Manitoba hunting outposts for Moose and Bear by outfitter guides at Big Sand Lake Lodge and Resort including Lake LeClair, Wolf Lake, and Jordon Lake.

Remotely situated within the subarctic wilderness of Canada, Big Sand Lake Lodge is located 525 miles north of Winnipeg, Manitoba. There is no road access to Big Sand Lake so the only way to get here is to fly.

The Lake is 70 miles long and comprises over 60,000 acres of pristine northern waters, containing the most sought after trophy fish in North America.

Every year our guests commonly catch and release 20-30 lb plus Northern Pike, 50 lb plus Lake Trout, 3-4 lb average Walleye's and Trophy sized Arctic Grayling.

This lake offers fishing diversity at it's best and it's waters are exclusive to Big Sand guests only. Big Sand Lodge is the only lodge located on the lake, there are no communities and no cabins making this a truly remote and very private World Class Fishing Lodge.

As others are drawn in imagination and body towards coral reefs and rain forests this unchanged frontier attracts the free spirit in all of us. Travelling north to the permafrost and tundra, the caribou and the wolves, you'll discover that the sun shines brightest from here. This unique subarctic landscape is beautiful with lots of interesting things to see and do.

While walking along the trails near the lodge you can find fresh tracks from moose, bear and wolves. Throughout your trip you can encounter numerous species of birds including Bald Eagles, Canada Geese, Surf Scoters, White Winged Scoters, Mergansers, Eider Ducks, Scaups, Mallards, Green Winged Teal, Bufflehead, American Widgeon, Common and Arctic Terns, Bonaparte Gulls, Kildeer, Spotted Sandpiper, Common Loons, Ravens and the ever present Herring Gulls, the largest of the Gull family.

Big Sand Lake gets its name from the immense amounts of sand deposits left behind in this region during the Wisconsin Glacial Period which dates back 20,000 years ago. Eskers are long, narrow, winding ridges of stratified sand and gravel. Eskers can be many miles long and resemble abandoned railway embankments which can range in length from 100 feet to 100 miles and more! These veritable mountains of sand can be quite large, achieving heights of 40 to 550 feet. This natural phenomena has occurred throughout the world where large scale glacial activity has occurred. Places such as Scandinavia, Ireland, Scotland and the area of Big Sand Lake bear physical witness to this impressive geological evolution. Guests can hike across the esker trails located just off the airstrip, discovering a unique Flora and Fauna ecosystem such as Arctic Cotton, Labrador Tea, Micro philia phila, Lichens and Caribou Moss.

Accommodations

With careful consideration given while designing the lay out of each log cabin we have added an impressive deck which has been newly furnished with ranch style chairs and tables. Evenings or early mornings spent on this deck provides you with a panoramic view of either Big Sand Lake or Kitimiwi Lake. We feel that a cabin is not only constructed to house you but more importantly is to inspire! Each cabin has a wood burning fireplace, 2 Queen sized beds, a full 3 piece bathroom and comes equipped with electric heat. You'll start your day off with hot coffee or tea delivered to your cabin, after all this is the vacation you've earned!

The Facility

Situated high atop an ancient glacial esker, the main lodge was built with the guests' needs foremost in mind. Constructed in 1987, the lodge features hundreds of square feet of glass providing the eye with a sweeping view of natures northern waters and thick patterns of birch and pine that serve as a background while dining or relaxing.

The lodge is further complimented with a bar and lounge, entertainment room with satellite T.V. fully furnished pool table, ping pong table, poker table and dart boards. We now have high speed internet connection in the Main Lodge for those who need to stay in touch with home. Satellite telephone service is also available.

Located on the upper level of the lodge we developed a separate conference room for private meetings. Our executive conference room is fully equipped with audio/visual technology, board tables and chairs. Everything is provided to conduct a productive sales meeting in an environment that lends itself to the outside beauty awaiting you just a few feet away. Over the years Big Sand has hosted a wide variety of corporate groups, turning your business meetings into a business adventure.

World Class Fishing

Since the first anglers arrived at Big Sand Lake in 1987, commencing the $6 million dollar, 5 Star-rated facility, we have been committed to catch and release. To us catch and release doesn't mean simply putting the fish back in the water.

First off it starts with our guides, who understand that their livelihood depends on the health of the fishery. Maintaining that World Class fishery is about applied consistency. Every season we learn more and more about these legendary trophy fish. The fact is that in this upper latitude of North America fish grow slow. For example the 49 ½ inch, 32 lb Northern Pike caught by Lawrence Beal is estimated to be 33 years old! No single person can do more to make your trip a success than your guide. The training and results at Big Sand are apparent. With that said we would like to tip our hat in recognition of our guides for a job well done, as they continue to further the standards within the Canadian Lodge Industry. It is our guides continuous effort to exceed our clients expectations and their conscientious care in maintaining Big Sand Lake Lodge as Canada's Ultimate Trophy Fishing destination.

World Class - Trophy Fishing

Northern Pike

A Master Angler Trophy must measure a minimum 41 inches in length. This legendary predator waits, she knows no fear. With ragged jaw and calculating eyes, she lurks in the shallow water weeds, just waiting to strike. In a split second you see the wake. Then you feel it - the pike's power and skill, equalled only by her fighting spirit.

The challenge of a trophy northern pike draws anglers from around the world and Big Sand Lake delivers time and time again. Known for its voracious appetite, this fish will devour anything passing by. Choose any moving bait as your way into an intense, slashing confrontation with one of our big monsters.

Lake Trout

A Master Angler Trophy Lake Trout must measure a minimum 35 inches in length. Perhaps it's their beauty. Perhaps it's this incredible place that it draws you to - the cold, deep, clear waters of Big Sand Lake. Perhaps it's the long, difficult fight it can take to triumph over tough lunker lake trout. All these things and more, make lake trout fishing at Big Sand Lake the classic angling experience.

Known as the "dwellers of the deep," these fish move to colder temperatures as the spring sun warms the waters. While light casting or spinning gear is suitable for the early months, you'll need to go deeper and drop your lure lower, using either bait or artificial lures to catch the "king" as the summer progresses.

Walleye

You'll never know how sweet it can be until you've hooked a Big Sand Lake Master Angler walleye. You'll need a minimum of 28 inches to qualify. Walleye at Big Sand are plentiful in supply and are they are a worthy adversary. Once on your line, the walleye will test your will to win right down to the wire. And the rewards are oh so wonderful, a delicacy fit for the shore lunch frying pan.

Walleye prefer the deep and cool waters. Narrow channels and deep water weed beds are among the hiding spots these fish prefer. Remember where there's one, there's usually a school of walleye ready to take a variety of artificial lures and natural baits.

Arctic Grayling

A Master Angler Arctic Grayling must measure a minimum of 18 inches in length. So you've come to the right place, right to the top of Manitoba. To the wild clear rapids of our arctic rivers, where you'll find a fish that soars through the air, setting sail with its long, high dorsal fin. The arctic grayling, though small in size, will challenge your ingenuity to keep it on your hook or from breaking your line as you battle its spunk amidst the fast-running water.

Few rival its beauty and spectacular fighting style. Grayling are the ultimate catch, especially when taken on the fly. Find a rapid, choose a small spinner and you'll have them lining up for your bait. Many an angler has ventured to our far north for pike, only to discover the added thrill and rapid-fire action arctic grayling offers.

Here your skills are truly tested. LeClair Lake is a short portage from the main camp and the walk is approximately 15 minutes, we do have a 4 wheeler to transport your gear back and forth, if required.
