Beachcombing
There are several great beaches right here in Ucluelet! Each has a unique trail associated with it for an easy and leisurely hike.
Big Beach is located close to town at the foot of Matterson Drive and can be accessed by Marine Drive also. This beach features a sheltered Picnic area, warm sandy beach, Lava rocks and access to the "Wild Pacific Trail". This is one of the best places for winter "Stormwatching". Look for Chitons on the rocks.
Little Beach is a BC Heritage Site, once a former First Nations Midden. Archaeologists have found artefacts and remains buried here. You will notice many local sport fishermen at the mouth of the bay in front of this beach in late summer. It is also known for its Moon snails.
Terrace Beach is just south of Little Beach and has access next to the Cabins there. It is a quiet sandy beach set amongst larger trees making it shady and moody. It is next to "He Tin Kis Park" and has access to the "Wild Pacific Trail".
Fletchers Beach is just a short 2klm drive or walk/ride north of the town. The trail to this beach is located on the west side of the Highway across from Fletchers Cove. A short 15-minute walk takes you to the local’s secret beach. Also just to the north of it is Wa ya Point and the southern boundary of the Pacific Rim National Park.
Half Moon Bay/Florencia Bay/Wreck Beach These beaches are within the Park and one might miss these gems since there is at present, no highway signage indicating their location. Approximately 2.5klms north of Town is the only cross road on the Highway, "Willow Brea Rd." Turn left and drive 100 metres to the Parking lot. There you will see signage for the trailhead. It is a 20-minute light walk to the fork for either Half Moon Bay or Florencia/Wreck Beach. Our favorite and certainly the most romantic beach in the region must be Half Moon Bay; it is not to be missed. Watch for the antics of the local Sea Otters! Florencia/Wreck Beach is a 5-kilometre beach with high bluffs and a river mouth. You will see Beautiful beach stones and differential erosion here. Florencia is named after a ship that sank after running aground on the Island you see in the middle of the Bay. This beach is a favorite of local surfers and has another access and parking lot at its north end via "Wick Road". It is in the Park an all rules apply, including pay parking.
Stormwatching
Ucluelet is well known for its winter Stormwatching due to its rocky shoreline and its proximity to deep water. It is located at the edge of Barclay Sound the "Graveyard of the Pacific" as it is known. A great number of vessels have met their fate here. The best places for Stormwatching are the Amphitrite Point Lighthouse, located at the Canadian Coast Guard Station. Winter Storm Waves can reach epic proportions and crash on the rocks with great thunder. It is not uncommon to see waves up to 50 feet high!
Another great place to view the winter storm surf is at Big Beach and along the Wild Pacific Trail. Be cautious during high winds as trees are occasionally blown down. For your safety, stay on the trail and do not climb on the rocks.
Wildlife Viewing
Wildlife is all around us here at Tauca Lea Resort and Spa. Recommended is a Whale Watching excursion or Seafari as a great way to see the Barclay Sound and its Whales, Sea lion Colonies and Eagles. One will also become more familiar with the Ancient past associated with the Broken Group Islands within the National Park Reserve. Once a summer location for a Native population of over 10,000 inhabitants prior to the decimation caused by smallpox brought by European Traders 200 years ago.
Bear Watching is easily done from your suite or the resort’s Gazebo. Just look across the Inlet to the shores and creek mouths where Black Bears routinely scavenge in late afternoons. Bears are also seen along trails and in particular where ripe berries are found all summer so be Bear Aware!
Bald Eagles are seen everywhere and many will perch at times around the resort. Visit the Whisky Dock during the off-loading of fishing boats and watch them gather! Notice the tall piling in the water in front of the Boat Basin Restaurant; Eagles will sit on it to spy their catch. You will also see Kingfishers and Humming birds as well as Great Herons and many other species wherever you look.
Deer are resident throughout Ucluelet. They like to feed on grasses at the sides of roads. Please exercise caution when driving to avoid collisions.
Predator species such as Wolves and Cougar are sited occasionally prompting conservation officers to place warnings at trailheads. Avoid these areas when posted. You are not likely to see these animals however they may see you! Never approach them, if you do encounter one make yourself as large and noisy as possible to scare them, then walk away backwards facing them. Never run with your back to a predator.
Do Not Feed The Wildlife! Please ensure that you do not leave garbage outside of your suite. Call front desk to have it removed when full.
