Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, General Information

Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, located in the fragile Clayoquot Sound Biosphere reserve near the seaside village of Tofino, British Columbia was founded in 1997 by Clayoquot Wilderness Resort Ltd.
In the decade since opening, the resort has grown its 'soft adventure and soft beds' program into one of the most exclusive and unique vacation offerings in the world.
Clayoquot Wilderness Resort promises discriminating travellers an ultra-luxurious eco-destination, four-star accommodations, otherworldly coastal cuisine, super natural adventure, and some of the most breathtakingly beautiful wilderness frontier left on the planet.
Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, Accommodations
Guest Tents
Outpost deluxe guest tents, like the lounge and spa tents, are roomy, great white canvas prospector-style quarters built on discreetly-situated raised wooden platforms, connected by cedar boardwalks. All, under canopy of the rainforest and along the water's edge.
All 12 deluxe tents offer a choice of one queen or two single Adirondack-style beds with luxuriant down duvets. Remote-controlled propane wood- stoves, antique dressers and tea tables, opulent rugs, oil lamps, heirloom china and silver accessories, and an abundance of candles, complete the offering.
Off-site generators send hot water to private showers and sinks, and provide a/c power for essential comforts like electric light, hairdryers and wireless internet to both guest and suite tents. Modern composting toilets, set in charming cedar outbuildings, rest anonymously behind each tent.
Suite Tents Across a timber bridge but within dinnerbell range of the cookhouse, five family suite tents sit perched on a hillside overlooking the Bedwell estuary. Family suite tents offer the same queen bed comfort as the deluxe guest tents, but are furnished with a convertible chesterfield (with premium queen mattress), and a larger lounge area with a small games table. Two of the suite tents share their slice of paradise with small twin-bedded bunk tents, suitable for extended family or two older children. Four more family suite tents rest up-stream, at the end of an undulating ribbon of cedar boardwalk.
Like the deluxe guest tents, family suite tents tender Adirondack-style beds dressed with luxurious down duvets. Remote-controlled propane wood-stoves, antique dressers, opulent area rugs, pressed-glass oil lamps, heirloom accessories, and candles galore promise romance and suite dreams.
Off-site generators send hot water to private showers and sinks, and provide a/c power for essential comforts like electric light, hairdryers and wireless internet to both deluxe guest and family suite tents. Camp Culture A typical Outpost day begins with the call of the wild. A loon or an eagle welcomes the sun - inviting its dance of light and leafy shadow against white canvas.
Soon, the percussive quiet is broken again by the gentle footfall of morning coffee en-route from the cookhouse. With a click of a button, a remote-controlled propane woodstove delivers toasty warmth and the camp comes to life.
A gourmet breakfast featuring coastal specialties - like smoked-salmon eggs benedict with organic fruit medley - unfolds at leisure, rolling gently into myriad wilderness activities, educational programs, and spa treatments a la carte.
Lounge Tents No true safari, eco or otherwise, would be complete without at least one tent assigned to the pursuit of sensory pleasures like reading, games, lounging and select barrel-aged spirits.
The Outpost has two such lounges - a games tent, and a library tent. The former, a plush turn-of-the-century Gentlemen's-Club-like collection of dark polished woods, opulent fabrics and burnished leather, where guests lose themselves in the lost arts of conversation and low-tech competition.
Antique furnishings display an impressive collection of antique and contemporary games of chance and skill.
Belying its presentation as an overstuffed country house reading room, the library lounge is in fact an ultra-modern satellite-internet café.
A loaded PC stands ready to connect guests to the outside world, and a router permits complimentary wireless internet access via portable computer from anywhere within 100' range.
Cookhouse The heart of the Outpost in the new ranch-style cookhouse, with its towering double-sided fieldstone fireplace, outdoor lounge, showpiece open-kitchen, and wrap-around viewing decks.
Flanking the outdoor lounge are the resorts' trademark 'bistro' and 'family' dining tents, whose individual charms have inspired many memorable occasions — several remarkably romantic betrothels and milestone celebrations among them.
Tables, set for two to twelve, groan under the weight of heirloom oil lamps, sparkling silver and the requisite dozens of candles.
Chef May presides over the 40'-long open-kitchen bar, serving up an ever-changing menu of his critically-acclaimed modern natural cuisine. Choose a seat at the bar for a casual (no less fabulous) evening, or a view table when a floor-to-ceiling window on the wild is on the menu.
Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, West Coast Cuisine
Chef May
Executive Chef Timothy May's easy-going way with people belies a take-no-prisoners approach to preparing his critically-acclaimed, trademark modern natural cuisine. Each dish starts with the same three ingredients; fresh, local and honest.
A granola at heart, Chef tempers classical training and sophisticated technique with a firm belief in letting ingredients speak for themselves.
Chef insists on supporting the local economy by buying fresh — letting the very nature of the region inspire exploration of a more natural method of preparation.
Regional growers and producers supply small-batch cheeses, giant oysters and scallops, free-range hens, wild salmon and halibut, just-picked berries and wild herbs and mushrooms unique to the rainforest.
Chef's modern natural cuisine favours organic ingredients over conventional, reduction sauces over cream-based, and vernacular themes over flash-in-the-pan culinary trends.
Tim considers the resorts' small size a definite advantage. "With so few guests to look after, there is plenty of time and resources to do something special every day." And special it is.
Breakfast A typical Outpost breakfast is anything but.
Long before the camp comes to life, pastry chefs and breakfast cooks prepare a banquet of fresh sweet and savoury favourites like wild blueberry and cornmeal griddle cakes, salalberry and rosemary scones, and pacific smoked salmon eggs benedict with peamale Canadian bacon.
Housemade muesli, honeyed yogurt, fresh-squeezed juices, and luscious fruit salads are self-serve breakfast staples. Grill items are made fresh to order.
Lunch
What's on for lunch depends on what's on the go.
If alder-smoked grilled salmon over wild greens, Island lager-crusted halibut and shoestring chips, or smoked Mosquito Bay oyster and thyme chowder sound like lunch, then pull up a chair.
Wilderness adventurers take ultra-gourmet backpack lunches along for the ride - or the hike, while loungers can visit Chef May in the cookhouse at just about the time he checks-in for the day.
If light is right, then contemplate a made-to-order deli sandwich like free-range chicken and grilled vegetables on house-made pan bread, or a seafood brochette and wild rice and mushroom salad.
But wherever you are and whatever you are up to - lunch is served when and how you like it.
Table D'hote Chef May's legendary table d'hote* tradition began at the Quait Bay resort in 1997 and evolved to include remarkable B.C. wine pairings accompanied by enthusiastic epicurious conversation.
When the Bedwell property opened in 2000, guests requested that the table d'hote* experience be standard Outpost fare.
And so it is that guests settle in the at bistro or family dining tent, in the cookhouse dining room, or at Chef's open-kitchen bar, and embark on a coastal culinary adventure of a lifetime.
Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, Activities
Guided Activities
The Clayoquot Sound Biosphere is a nature lover's paradise -- a true wilderness playground where the opportunities for adventure are limited by imagination alone.
Thousands of pristine acres, hundreds of miles of abandoned roads and old-growth forest trails, volcanic beach scapes, alpine valleys, lush fern gardens, and intertidal waterways attract all manner of untamed marine wild and rainforest animal life. Bear, martens, eagles, whales, seals, sea lions, puffins, porpoises and several endangered species of birds call the sound their home.
And here, among majestic landscapes and the wildest of creatures, resort guests work at play. Horseback riding, kayaking, canoeing, whale and bear watching, hiking and fresh and salt water fishing excursions are led by experienced, first-aid-trained wilderness guides. Unguided Activities A typical unstructured, Outpost day might begin, picnic-in-hand with a leisurely stroll or mountain bike ride up sun-dappled Alder Alley to a vast valley meadow bisected by ribbons of timber fencing, and dotted with aging silver-grey barns.
With snow-capped mountains and glaciers as a backdrop, and pristine wilderness all around, there is no more perfect place for a picnic.
Resort guides encourage self-guided exploration of the property, but ask guests to take a guide dog along for the ride - or walk.
State-of-the-art equipment is available for the taking, including mountain bikes and helmets; fishing rods, tackle and bait; kayaks, canoes, life preservers, site maps, gold pans, and backpacks.
Guests need only inquire, and they will be suitably outfitted and prepared for a self-guided adventure of a lifetime.
Conservancy Activities
On the western-most edge of Canada, in the ancient exotic temperate rainforest of the Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Reserve, our wild is virgin.
Untouched by the last glacial slide, the environment is intoxicatingly pure, fragile and dense with wildlife.
Indigenous people believe that the Clayoquot Rainforest vibrates with the energy of the ages -- a living, breathing chronicle of evolution.
With snow-capped mountains and glaciers as a backdrop, and pristine wilderness all around, there is no more perfect place for a picnic.
The Clayoquot Sound Biosphere is the best and largest example of a temperate rainforest left on the planet. Its stewardship is an immense responsibility and an even greater privilege.
The natural environment is what attracted resort owners to the area in 1997, and what inspired the creation of an Environmental Legacy Program.
The $3 million, five-year program is funded solely by resort revenues, and identifies five key areas of research, conservation and rehabilitation.
Guest participation in each of the five stewardships - salmon habitat restoration, bear mapping, whale feeding and migration study, marine habitat inventory, and raptor rehab and release - is growing alongside our understanding of the nature of things.
And, thanks to resort guests, the nature of things is growing alongside us.
Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, Healing Grounds Services
Facilities
By day, the Healing Grounds compound's secluded wrap-around sundecks and private lounge areas offer peace and quiet sanctuary in one of the most breathtakingly beautiful natural settings in the world.
By night, oil lamps and torches gently light up the foreshore, inviting couples to return for a moonlight walk to the wood-fired sauna or secluded hot tubs.
Four treatment tents and surrounding massage platforms cantilever out over ever-changing scenes of the Bedwell River estuary, and its intertidal play of migratory birds, black bear, spawning salmon, and otters at play.
Guests move lazily from amenity to amenity, or while away an entire afternoon dozing in a chaise or hammock. Resort staff check-in regularly to stock ultra-soft towels, stoke fires, top-off herbal iced tea, or pour another glass of something more adventurous.
Inside, under a blanket of warmth and layers of indulgent comfort, there is little to detract from complete and total surrender.
The healing is complete.
Treatments Outpost treatment tents promise gorgeous views of the Bedwell River estuary as well as sensory pleasures like Hot Stone and Swedish, massage, plus aromatherapy, spa manicures and pedicures, hair removal, body wraps and salt glows, and a menu of services for gentlemen.
Gentle pursuits like morning stretch or yoga classes are custom-made to order.
Outpost massage therapists prefer the Sea Flora, Yonka Paris and TrueFitt & Hill product lines which provide female and male skin of all types and ages, the perfect nutritional nourishment needed for healing and a healthy glow.
Meetings & Retreats
We mean business. But our strategies may be a little bit wild.

Fact is, we can take your leadership team almost anywhere you want to go, and they will have more fun getting there and get greater results upon arrival, than you ever dreamed possible.
We know that relaxation, play and inspiring environments are three key components of productive mental therapy. We know that in order to think outside the box, one has to get outside the box -- sometimes way out.
Past incentive travel program guests of the resorts can attest that there is no greater incentive to exceed quota, than a visit to Clayoquot Wilderness Resort.
The Outpost at Bedwell River hosts incentive groups from North America and Europe regularly. Exceeding the expectations of those that expect the most is a welcome challenge to a staff trained to please.
Resort management and corporate sales will present to corporate groups anywhere in the world - issuing a challenge in person, in brilliant technicolour, and building programs and events to suit.
Weddings & Honeymoons
Wedding
There is something in the air at Clayoquot Wilderness Resort - something that makes love grow wild.
Here, engagements, weddings, anniversaries and romantic re-kindlings take on a spiritual quality found nowhere else in the world.
The resort lends itself to intimate small and medium size weddings with two to 50 guests. Choose all-inclusive or a la carte services, including planning, marriage commissioner, photographer, flowers, music, entertainment, full-service food and beverage, luxury acccommodation, wilderness adventures, air transportation and ground and water transfers.
We have hosted some truly spectacular weddings, including one on a deserted white sandy beach, several in our lush fern gardens , and several others inside or on the decks and lookouts surrounding the timber Cookhouse. More than one intensely romantic renewal of vows has happened in a great white canvas tent at the Bedwell River Outpost.
The greatest successes come at the hands of those inclined to work with our natural surroundings - mixing old and new traditions, combining contemporary elements with those found in nature.
Honeymoons
What better place to begin a new life together than in the land that time forgot? Where balmy summer days and wild nights inspire romance and relaxation and the heady rainforest air is as pure and intoxicating as new love.
The intimate scale of the resort prescribes privacy and a level of service and pampering unlike anything offered by large all-inclusive resorts.
The memories you make here are yours alone, as unique and original as your dreams - unfolding at a pace set by you.
Slip seamlessly into resort culture or invite resort staff to delight and surprise you with little extras conceived for newlyweds and newly-in-loves.
Perhaps a candlelit dinner for 'just two' in the Outpost's games tent, or a tandem massage overlooking Bedwell River. Or maybe, wild strawberries and champagne arrive unannounced by launch or horsedrawn wagon - whisking the pair of you off to a secluded beach or river valley meadow.
