Long Bay Beach Resort & Villas
At Long Bay Beach Resort & Villas, you'll discover a hidden paradise which isn't hard to find, but is so hard to leave, and even harder to forget. A place where people set their own pace and everything is unspoiled--except for our guests.
Nestled in a secluded, 52-acre hillside estate on the island of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, Long Bay is more than a beach resort of stunning beauty. It might be the most refreshing vacation experience of your life.
Rates $320 to $1275 per night
Mountain peaks covered with frangipani and sage characterize its southern coast, while its northern shores display white sandy beaches, groves of bananas and mangoes and clusters of palm trees. Sage Mountain National Park is, at 1,780 feet, the B.V.I.'s highest point. Filled with lush tropical vegetation, the park exhibits many of the characteristics of a rain forest.
Road Town, located on the southern shore, is the busy capital of the B.V.I., as well as the central administrative and business centre of the Territory. Here are the shops, banks, administration buildings, the hospital and Government House. The beautiful 4-acre J.R. O'Neal Botanic Gardens feature a lush array of indigenous and exotic plants.
Famous as a hunting ground during the buccaneering days, Beef Island is the site of the BVI's main airport and is connected to Tortola by the Queen Elizabeth Bridge. Mangroves line the shores beneath the bridge, and an excellent beach, Long Bay is on the island's northern shore.
Tortola, the chain's main island has a population of 14,000-plus.
Tortola's scenic roads are most enjoyable way to explore the island, and pass through quaint little villages and delightful sandy beaches. Rum distilleries are one local industry which has not changed in over three hundred years. If you want a visitor can watch the rum making process during the Spring season. Yacht charters or captained speedboats are an enjoyable way of seeing the island's coastline and visiting neighboring islands. Road Town has a good selection of shops, including a supermarket which imports most of its goods from the United States. You should rent a car or jeep to see some of the isolated locations. Tortola has many wonderful villas available to rent.

Long Bay Beach Resort & Villas, Tortola
On a hillside overlooking its own white powdery beach, the 52-acre Long Bay Beach Resort has been attracting a discreet international clientele of both well-known and unknown guests. Armand Assante, Joan Margolies and Sam Waterston are among the celebrities who have chosen to vacation here. Athletic types can swim serious laps in the 130-foot pool, while others enjoy the swim-up bar, soak in a jacuzzi, or slip down the water slide. The Peter Burwash International tennis courts, lit for night play, are considered to be the best in the British Virgin Islands.
Accommodations run the gamut from hillside and poolside villas and studios, to beachfront cabanas at the water's edge, where you can swing in your own hammock and listen to the waves roll into the sand.
Villas come with kitchenettes and a second story featuring a luxuriously large master bedroom with a king-sized bed and a view of the ocean. Some rooms offer four-poster beds and private pools, and all of them are furnished with designer fabrics in varying shades of coral with bamboo and driftwood furniture, and colorful Caribbean artwork. Each room also has air-conditioning, direct dial phones, refrigerator, coffee machine, alarm clock radio, hairdryer and safe.
The swimming and snorkeling don't get much better elsewhere, but some guests like to venture out and explore other areas of the island - and other islands. Tortola is well located as the central island in the chain, and it's an easy ferry trip to Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, Peter Island, or Cooper Island. More rugged adventure are run by Nature's Secret Adventure Company, % 284-495-2722, fax 284-495-1910, located at Long Bay. They offer 3½-hour nature and historical tours up scenic mountain paths and along secluded beaches, a sea kayaking adventure, a hike through Sage Mountain's tropical rain forest, or a bicycle tour of Tortola.
Meals at Long Bay can be as informal or formal as you like; the Beach Café, situated in an enchanting old stone sugar mill, is open all day. Unlimited champagne pours freely. At the adjacent bar, which overlooks the beach, you can dance under the stars to West Indian music. For a more formal dinner, the Garden Restaurant offers sophisticated cuisine and emphasizes fresh fish and vegetarian fare. Set in a tropical garden, the soft lights and gentle breezes always lend a romantic mood."
