Originally an 18th century coral warehouse and sugar mill, the late British designer, Oliver Messel carefully restored many of the original features of the Cotton House. The Cotton House underwent a full scale renovation, completed in December 1996 and a second phase of the renovation in December 1997, the restoration of an original Oliver Messel house to the "Coutinot House" which now boasts five of the most deluxe and distinctive rooms and suites. In the Caribbean with the third refurbishment and development in 2004 saw the creation of the two bedroom Cotton Hill Residence, two Duplex Suites, a large swimming pool and a number plunge pools and the total refurbishment of all existing rooms. It is widely recognised as one of the Caribbean's top established luxury resorts.
Located on the tiny Grenadine island of Mustique which is only 3 by 1/2 miles, the Cotton House is situated on a picturesque hillside surrounded by the Caribbean Sea to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Mustique is one of the most exclusive private islands in the world and the Cotton House is the island's only full-service hotel. The Cotton House has been managed by GLA International since November 1998.
Cotton House Resort Accommodations
The accommodations at The Hermitage are in cottages of historical or architectural interest and designed to catch the prevailing breezes. Every bedroom has an heirloom canopy bed, antique and period furnishing, and full bath with showers and tubs. All rooms have unique and charming views from their private porches. Amenities within each cottage include direct-dial telephones, in-room safes, ceiling fans, refrigerators, irons and ironing boards, tea and coffee making facilities. A major refurbishment and upgrade was carried out at the property in 1997/1998, keeping the level of comfort within our accommodation at its highest.
Cotton Hill - With panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Resort Gardens, this extremely private two-bedroom residence has its own dedicated Butler to cater to every request. It boasts a spacious sitting room, dining room with an additional outdoor gazebo and large private swimming pool. Each bedroom is furnished with king beds and signature French Antique pieces. The master bedroom is set apart from the main residence, each of the bedrooms have a large bathroom with double basins, a large bath and separate shower, the master bedroom shower is located outside with views over the Atlantic Ocean.
Duplex Suites - These suites are situated on the landscaped hills overlooking the island?s manicured grounds and have partial views of the Caribbean Sea. The upper floor has a king bed veiled in romantic voile netting and is elegantly furnished. With a fully equipped dressing room and two spacious baths located both on the upper and lower floors making these suites perfect for families. Located just outside the sitting room on the lower level is a private plunge pool with an elegantly furnished pool deck. Both upstairs verandas and the pool deck are ideal for in room dining and in room spa treatments.
Grenadine Suites - With two suites located on the upper level and two on the lower floor all with French doors opening from both the bedroom and the living room onto a large privately furnished veranda. The two suites on the lower floor feature private plunge pools which flow from the suites veranda with an elegantly furnished pool deck. These accommodations are suited for couples with maximum two children, as extra twin beds can be added in the living rooms. A door separates the bedrooms from the living rooms and the suites each have one main bathroom on suite with a powder room located off the living room.
Sea Front Suite - Situated on the corner of the Coutinot House with an entry hall leading past a walk-in closet to the sitting area and continuing to the bedroom. The bedroom is captured within a semi-circle wall of French doors which opens onto a furnished wrap-around veranda providing magnificent views of the Caribbean Sea. The king bed is veiled in romantic netting. The bathroom consists of a separate bath and shower surrounded by lush tropical plants. A private plunge pool with an elegantly furnished pool deck completes the ambiance of this suite.
Sea Front Master - Nestled in the centre of the Coutinot House, this spacious room overlooks the Caribbean Sea and hotel beach. An oversized elegantly furnished veranda with a private plunge pool and pool deck, offers stunning views of the afternoon sunset and panoramic profiles of nearby Grenadine Islands. Decorated with woven cane furnishings with a four-poster king bed draped in exotic netting and well appointed furnishings and a magnificent marble shower and bathroom offering a window view of the Caribbean Sea with its own separate dressing room adjacent to the bathroom.
Sea Front Rooms - These three luxury king rooms overlook the Caribbean Sea, all are furnished with woven rattan signature pieces and feature four-poster beds crowned in decorative netting. The two rooms on the ground floor feature separate baths and showers surrounded by lush tropical plants and elegantly furnished verandas with private plunge pools and pool decks. One room (Tower) sits privately on the upper level featuring an elevated Bathtub providing bath-time sea and sunset views, an outdoor shower completes the bathroom experience.
Messel Rooms - These four deluxe rooms are situated on the hillside overlooking the resort. Two rooms are perched on the upper floor with wrap around verandas looking out towards the Atlantic Ocean. Those on the patio-level boast oversize corner terraces ideal for outside dining and relaxing. All rooms are fitted with king beds veiled in mosquito netting; separate dressing rooms and marble bathrooms. These units have the option of connecting to adjacent rooms from the balcony or patio which is convenient with families with children.
Cottages - The cottages are charming stand alone West Indian-styled individual accommodations with garden views and distant Atlantic Ocean views. Bedrooms feature king-size beds with decorative netting, spacious dressing rooms and bathrooms with elevated baths. Each room opens onto large verandas which are furnished with lounge chairs and dining furniture.

Veranda restaurant - Open for Breakfast and dinner, dining in this restaurant encompasses the best of the Caribbean flavours incorporating the local supplies in offering a menu that is a simple yet an eclectic international gastronomic experience.
The Great Room - The Messel design with it colonial feel makes this room a focus point of the hotel where guests mingle, meet and relax. Enjoy your afternoon tea on the veranda that overlooks the Lilly pond, have a pre-dinner cocktail or after dinner cigar and cognac; this room is a lounge that creates a feeling of being.
In Room Dining - Choose from the Chef?s selection menu or let us cater to you needs by creating a menu that will be served to you in your own private dining area. In Room Dining at the Cotton House is more than just room service, it is an experience which reflects the attention to detail and a moment of culinary delight.
Beach Cafe Restaurant & Bar - Al fresco dining on the water's edge is a casual dining experience that you can only experience at the Cotton House. The menu appreciates the local produce and delivers a selection of fresh caught fish, lobster, salads, baguettes, fried seafood baskets, pizzas and grill items that is simple yet light and delicious.
Pool Bar - This area by the pool deck is serviced by the pool bar where a complete beverage selection is available as well as beach towels on arrival, with complementary refreshing sorbets, chilled towels and cold water offered during the day. A full beverage service is offered by our pool attendant from the Pool bar which was the original Sugar Mill.

Cotton House Spa range of massages and treatments stimulate and restore, promoting relaxation, healing, balance and peace of mind and body. Our team of skilled professionals has developed a range of innovative programmes to suit a variety of particular needs and lifestyles.
Gym - The ground floor of the spa, houses the well-equipped fitness centre with the state of the art cardiovascular equipment consisting of treadmills, crosstraining, multi-work-out and bicycle machines all with panoramic views through large bay windows across the hotel gardens onto the Caribbean Sea. The use of the gymnasium is complimentary for all in-house guests over 16 years old. Reservations are necessary as only four guests are permitted at any one time in the gymnasium.
Activities
Beaches - Mustique is a picturesque and secluded 1,400 acre island surrounded by nine beaches of pure white sand, with gently swaying coconut palms and warm turquoise waters. Macaroni Beach is perhaps the most famous of Mustique's beaches and is situated on the east coast of the island. Other popular beaches on the Atlantic or Caribbean are Endeavour, Lagoon, L'Ansecoy and Simplicity, several of which have picnic hut facilities. Reservations for picnic tables can be made through the Hotel Reception.
Swimming-Pool - An 18 metre by 6 metre swimming pool is located in the centre of the resort which is furnished with teak lounges and large umbrellas, with views across the hotel gardens to the Caribbean Sea.
Tennis - The two recently refurbished tennis courts are available for guest use at the resort as well as 4 flood lit courts located two minutes drive from the hotel on the Island. Private lessons are available with the Mustique Island Tennis Director.
Boating - Day trips to the neighbouring islands can be arranged from the hotel. Enjoy a sailing or power boat trip to the neighboring Grenadine Islands of Bequia, Canouan, Tobago Cays, Palm, Union, and Petit St. Vincent. Boats charter prices vary accordingly to location and destination.
Diving & Water Sports - The water sports department is located on property and introductory dives, open water certification and other various dive courses are available with a certified dive instructor. A number of non-motorised water sports equipment is available from the water sports department on a complementary basis
Fishing - Inshore and deep-sea fishing - price available upon request . Year-round catches may include: inshore - salt water salmon and mackerel, jack, yellowtail snapper and barracuda and deep sea - tuna, dorado (mahi-mahi), wahoo, sail fish and marlin.
Fitness Trail - Located near the airport and you'll find 15 exercise "stations" scattered between L'Ansecoy Beach and the tennis courts. You can walk around the 2.2 mile loop if you choose, taking between 30 minutes and an hour, depending on your exertion rate. Each instruction has different levels from beginner to expert.
Hiking - It is easy to explore the history of Mustique going back to the days when cotton was king. Mustique is easy to explore on foot although there are no marked trails. The adventurous can find the remains of old sugar mills, slave quarters and plantation houses and pre-Columbian pottery is also occasionally found. A number of beaches are connected along the coastline by rustic stone paths.
Horseback Riding - The Mustique Equestrian Centre offers thoroughbred horses and ponies to take you on scenic riding trails all around the island. These trails meander up into the hills, offering impressive panoramic views, and down on the white sand beaches where you can indulge in your childhood fantasy of galloping in the surf.
Bird watching - Over 50 species are indigenous to Mustique, including the Mangrove Cuckoo and Tropical Kingbird.
Golfing - The Raffles Resort and Golf Club on the neighboring island of Canouan offers a demanding 18 hole course (72 par). A golfers package includes green fees, golf cart, lunch and use of the Beach Club facilities - price available upon request. Transportation to and from Canouan is easily arranged a 10 minute charted flight or 45 minutes by power boat.
Fauna and Flora - From the woodlands on the hillsides to the hardwood hammock and mangrove communities, to the beaches, sea grass and coral reefs...all well-worth exploring. Over 100 species of plants, 55 species of birds can be found on and around our island. The story is the same below the water where the surrounding coral reefs teem with over 115 species of fish, all in different colors, shapes and sizes.
Picnic - A picnic hamper from the Cotton House is a unique experience not to be missed and can be taken on any of the nine beaches around the island.
