Riu Ocho Rios Entertainment & NightLife
Faith’s Pen 12 miles south of Ocho Rios on A3 to intersection of A1; continue south on A1 about 4 miles
Foodies shouldn’t miss the small community of Faith’s Pen, where rows of food stands offer food specialties with home-cooked taste. For just a few dollars, buy a streetside lunch of jerk or callaloo served at a picnic table. Faith’s Pen stalls include such names as “Neita’s One Stop,” “Johnny Cool No. 1” and “Shut’s Night and Day.” Look for jerk chicken, curried goat, roast fish and mannish water. You can expect to fill up on traditional dishes for under $10 per person. The facilities are spartan. Each stall has a small area with stools, and meals are served on Styrofoam plates.
Island Village Few miles west of hotel
Island Village is Jamaica's first Park comprising of a wide range of entertainment and retail services on the Ocho Rios waterfront adjacent to the Cruise Ship Pier. Designed to reflect the sensibility of a small coastal community, the Village features an array of diverse entertainment including Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville, Cove Theater, ReggaeXplosion, outdoor amphitheater and stage for major events, 220 seat Cinema/Theatre with video conferencing/satellite broadcast facilities, Village Square for street performers and craft producers, The village Green, Beach sports and Duty Free with Specialty retail shopping, children's outdoor playground and indoor arcade, and an interactive Reggae Museum. We have taken great care to preserve the existing environment of mature trees and clear springs, while integrating the modern infrastructure necessary to create an urban oasis by the sea capable of servicing several thousand people at one time.
Nightlife Reggae Strip
Much of the late-night action in Ocho Rios takes place in the resorts and along a stretch of James Street known as the Reggae Strip. The area is similar, although smaller in scale, to Mo Bay’s Hip Strip. This Reggae Strip (directly across from the Renaissance Jamaica Grande) comes alive every Thursday evening starting at 7pm. At that time, the street bustles with live entertainers and booths offering local cuisine. One of the top nightspots in town is Jamaic’n Me Crazy at the Renaissance Jamaica Grande. It’s popular with both locals and travelers.
Nature
Chukka Cove
Chukka Cove is a farm and stable which offers rides to suit anyone, from beginners to the most experienced. Their beach ride takes you through a dairy and cattle farm to the beach where an exhilarating ride through the waves will get your adrenaline flowing. Just recently, they have added an exciting new attraction, a bike ride through the spectacular scenery of the Jamaican mountains down to a white sand beach and a refreshing plunge into the clear blue sea.
Coyaba River Garden and Museum
This attraction offers information and displays on the Arawaks (indigenous) through a small but nice museum. Starting with pre-Columbian history, displays follow the development of the island through the years. Special exhibits spotlight the “famous sons of St. Ann,” including Bob Marley and Marcus Garvey, while other recall the history of the region with facts such as Falmouth’s introduction of electricity, something achieved before the city of Philadelphia boasted electric power. The gardens are the real attraction though. Stroll past natural springs and waterfalls, where small pools are filled with colorful koi and turtles. You’ll see Ginger lilies, silk cotton trees (which bloom only every seven years), Jamaican cedar, pimento, jade vines and bamboo.
Cranbrook Flower Forest
This beautiful park is a must-see for anyone who wants to experience the lush beauty of Jamaica away from the crowds. The area is the private creation of Ivan Linton, who has pampered the plants of this former plantation for over two decades. Today you will see a bird of paradise, croton, ginger, heliconia and begonias. The grounds are perfect for a picnic. After you eat, hike alongside the shady Laughlands’ Great River. The path climbs high into the hills to a waterfall paradise and is highly recommended.
Dolphin Cove
Dolphin Cove is the Caribbean's newest and Jamaica's only dolphin attraction. This magnificent property has a natural cove which is surrounded by 4 acres of lush tropical rain forest. Visitors can swim with the dolphins, have a dolphin encounter, touch the dolphins or relax on glistening white sand, enjoy the setting or browse for souvenirs at our very own Gift Shop. Also, dolphins aren't the only attraction here! : Dolphin Cove is home to other exotic Caribbean species such as Stingrays, Eels, friendly Sharks, Snakes, Macaws and other unique tropical birds, fish and reptiles.
Dunn’s River and Falls
This is the one attraction that is not to be missed while at Ocho Rios. Dunn’s are spectacular series of falls which can be climbed as well. Guides lead groups up the falls, and then descend to a crafts market. Dunn’s is not the romantic getaway you might imagine, and can be quite an adventure trying to maneuver through tourists, but is well worth it. Be prepared to get wet!
Fern Gully A3, south of Ocho Rios
Fern Gully is a stretch of Highway A3 that winds south from Ocho Rios. For three miles, the road is lined with lush ferns and abundant plants; well worth a drive even if you’re not headed that way.
Green Grotto Caves
Situated on 25.9 hectares of the island's beautiful North Coast, the Caves are located between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay. The cave has been used as a hiding place for many people in history from pirates to the Spanish governor who was avoiding the British. The central feature of this natural attraction is the large labyrinthine limestone cave with its numerous rock formations, its stalactites, stalagmites and abundance of overhead ceiling pockets. Green Grotto is 1,525 metres long and 12 metres deep and is characterised by numerous chambers and light holes and a subterranean lake - the Grotto Lake - occupies its bowels.
Nine Mile
This small community was the birthplace of reggae legend Bob Marley. Today his former home is the Bob Marley Centre and Mausoleum (open daily; admission). Tucked behind a tall fence, the site is marked with green and gold flags. Tours are led by Rastafarians who take visitors through the house and point out the single bed that Marley wrote about in “Is This Love.” The home’s walls are filled with photographs and scribbled messages left by fans.
Prospect Plantation Tour
One of the oldest-established plantation tours the island has to offer. If you’re interested in learning about Jamaica’s fruits and agriculture, take a tour! This working farm takes visitors by tractor-drawn jitney or on horseback to view fields of bananas, cassava, sugarcane, coffee, allspice and more. A herb garden is a new addition. Peacocks roam the property and a horseback tour instead of a jitney tour is an option for the more energetic. Trail bikes tours are yet another possibility and there is even miniature golf.
Shaw Park Botanical Gardens
These beautiful 25-acre gardens are perched high above Ocho Rios, with excellent views of the bay and the coast. The gardens include a stunning waterfall as well as many tropical blooms. Acres of lawns and terraces tumble down the hillside and are enhanced by an interesting variety of native and imported trees, decorative shrubs and roses. There is also a bar, a cascading stream to splash in if you are hot, and even a tame hummingbird that enjoys hamming it up for photographers.
