St. George's Caye Resort is a private island paradise in the tropics of Belize.
This conveniently located private island haven is just 20 minutes travel away from the mainland, the closest caye to Belize City. Each year, more and more adventure travelers come to discover Belize as one of the world's most precious natural treasures. It's famous coral reef, the second longest in the world, is home to a brilliant variety of ocean dwelling life, and is sought out by scuba diving, snorkeling, reef fishing, and adventure enthusiasts from around the globe.
Though St. George's Caye is the closest inhabited island to the Belize mainland, it is still far enough away to keep the mainland out of sight and mind. The sense of seclusion you will find while a guest at the resort will create a truly personal experience.
From the moment you lay eyes on the cabanas, built over the beach and sea, you know you are in a whole new world, one where ease and comfort take precedence over all else.
St. George’s Caye Resort Belize History
Not just any paradise island, St. George's Caye is the bedrock of Belize’s independence from the imperial stronghold of Spain. In the mid 1600s, shipwrecked British sailors became the first recorded European settlers in Belize, known as the Baymen. They logged hardwoods in Belize for export to Europe. The Spaniards had been intent on conquering the Yucatan coast since the early 1500s and periodic attacks were made to reclaim sovereignty, resulting in treaties between England and Spain, allowing the Baymen to continue logging The Caye is steeped in rugged history and was once home to infamous pirates as the likes of Blackbeard and Pierre Le Grande. It later became the first capital of the British Settlement in the mid 1600s. But the island's most commemorative moment came on September 10, 1798 at the Battle of St. George's Caye.
Just over 200 years ago the Baymen of Belize defended their tiny settlement against a Spanish invasion of 32 ships carrying 2,000 troops and 500 seamen. The Baymen's modest fleet consisted of the sloop--HMS Merlin-- with 117 sailors and troops on board, two sloops of 25 men each and seven gun flats with 16 men each. The decisive battle was going to take place in the waters around St. George's Caye. At the sound of the first gunfire about 200 troops and Baymen, who had been left to guard the mainland, could not be restrained from going to the aid of the Merlin. Anything that floated was set with whatever arms could be mustered. Black men and white men fought courageously side by side, miraculously without the loss of a single life. The Spanish, on the other hand, buried many of their dead on nearby Caye Chappel. Incredibly, on that memorable day -- heavily outnumbered and against all odds-- the Baymen achieved a decisive victory. This was the last attempt made by the Spanish to take control of Belize
St. George’s Caye Resort Belize Accommodations
St. George's Caye Resort sits on one of Belize's best kept secrets, the pristine, historic and exclusive private residence island of St. George's Caye. A gracious circular pier, on which guests can relax as they gaze over a calm lagoon, lies on the west side of the Lodge. The western sea is dotted with mangroves, homes of gentle giant manatees, dolphins and a host of other sea life. No need to look further than under the pier to see how rich and abundant the Caribbean Sea is. To the east, or windward side, lays the second longest barrier reef in the world and it happens to be our backyard. The trade wind keeps the deep tanning tropical sun comfortable to laze the day away. The two bodies of water are within a stones throw from each other, so all you need is to pivot from the middle of the resort to take in the view of the sunrise and then the sunset each and every day.
Beach Front Cabanas
Our 6 Cabanas, built over sand and sea offer a unique island esthetic, much like huts in Tahiti in the South Pacific. It refers to the personal attention given to our divers with an ideal ratio between instructors and divers. We prefer to have smaller groups that get more personal attention instead of larger groups doing "cattle diving." If you are a novice diver, or just haven't been diving in a while, our instructors will take the time to go over skills with you in the shallows of the ocean to make sure you are 100% comfortable and confident before going on dives. There is no rush with the Resort's program, we do this at your pace.
