La Cruz and Penas Blancas, North Guanacaste Vacations and Luxury Travel Packages
The village of La Cruz is near the northwest pinnacle of the Guanacaste National Park. Light blue stone benches decorate the Parque Central, where shade trees provide a welcome respite from the midday heat. At the edge of the cliff, 100 meters away, the Mirador Ehecatl opens to the grandiose panoramic view of the pacific bay of Bahia Salinas. On a clear day you can see all the way to the Isla Bolanos Game Preserve from the Mirador.
From La Cruz it is 20 kilometers to the Nicaraguan border. Penas Blancas is the name of the border station (open only from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.) here. As it is not a town, it is not surprising that there are no overnight accommodations. Back in La Cruz, a six-kilometer-long gravel road leads to the small fishing village of Puerto Soley on the Pacific coast. Set in the narrow bay of Bahia Saunas, the tiny port town has little more to offer visitors than the sailors' bar and a simple restaurant. After stopping for a cool Costa Rican beer, you shouldn't miss the opportunity to rent a boat for a trip to the island of Bolanos.
