Santa Cruz, Costa Rica Vacations and Luxury Travel Packages

Some 20 kilometers northwest of Nicoya is the city of Santa Cruz (Holy Cross), with its 10,000 inhabitants. Around 1,800 Spanish colonial rulers founded the city on the banks of the Rio Diria (named after the 16th-century Chorotega Chief Dirid).

The jewel of this colonial city is its Parque Central, filled, regardless of the season, with profusely blooming flowers and shady trees. A massive 19th-century church tower rises skyward on the southern side of the park. Its walls, which could easily have served as a fort, were badly damaged in a 1950 earthquake and still bear its visible scars. The new modern church built next door seems strangely out of place because of its design, apparently inspired by the architecture of the Sydney Opera House and the Cathedral of Brazilia.

Santa Cruz is primarily known as the folklore capital of Costa Rica. At the musical faculty of the University of Costa Rica, which was founded in the city, many of the students are occupied reviving the country's old musical traditions. Students perform dances, handed down by their forefathers, on stages throughout the Nicoya Peninsula, and earn a little extra pocket money with their performances in hotels.

On January 15 and July 25, Cruzenos celebrate their famous dance festival which attracts visitors from all over the country.
