Tour Itinerary
Days 1-2:
Spend your first night in San José, then drive to Monteverde and its nearby Cloud Forest. Monteverde was founded by a group of Quakers in 1954 as a model for sustainable development and protection of the environment; its residents are dairy farmers, naturalists and travel service providers.
Day 3:
Visit the Monteverde Butterfly Garden and the Cloud Forest Reserve, which contains six ecologically diverse habitats that are home to as many as 400 species of bird, 490 species of butterfly, 100 species of mammals and 1,500 species of plants.
Day 4:
Travel to Rio Chiquito, travelling along scenic gravel roads to Lake  Arenal for a bird's-eye view of the region from hanging bridges poised above the trees. Later, a local family farm hosts a traditional lunch before your flight to Tortuguero. Sitting on a narrow spit of land bordered by the Caribbean Sea and the Tortuguero River, the area is a mix of narrow paths winding through exuberant greenery.
Day 5:
Explore the area by boat, a tranquil interlude scented by white ginger blossom and enlivened by glimpses of sloth, howler monkey, parrot and macaw. Then visit the Caribbean Conservation Corporation (CCC) Museum to learn about the Atlantic green sea turtle that use Tortuguero's beaches as their egg-laying grounds.
Day 6:
After breakfast, board a charter flight to Puerto Jiménez and transfer to Lapa Rios, a luxury wilderness hideaway in the middle of a private nature reserve spread over a thousand acres of Central America's last remaining lowland tropical rainforest.
Days 7-8:
You have two Days to explore Lapa Rios. Take a medicine walk with your guide through primary forest and learn about traditional Indian uses of barks, leaves and saps as medicine. You may also hike down the hills or through virgin rainforest to pristine waterfalls or glimpse nocturnal wildlife on a night walk.
Day 9:
Return this morning to San José and transfer to your hotel.
Day 10:
Board your homebound flight or continue to your next Latin American destination.
