Itinerary
Day 1, Sat: USA / Managua Begin your holiday with a flight to Managua, the gateway to the appealing attractions of an emerging country. You are met and transferred to your hotel Real Metrocentro Intercontinental
Day 2, Sun: Managua / Selva Negra Cloud Forest Visit Managua’s incredible ancient site, the fossilized Acahualina footprints of prehistoric humans and animals, frozen in time as they ran to the lake to escape volcanic fires some 6,000 years ago. Then depart north into rugged mountain country and enter a private cloud forest reserve at 4,300 feet. Relax at your spacious cabin in gardens dripping with orchids and ferns and bromeliads at every level, or take a hike or horseback ride under the towering forest canopy. Selva Negra Mountain Resort (B,L,D)
Day 3, Mon: Selva Negra Cloud Forest Toucans, monkeys, hummingbirds and perhaps an elusive sloth, agouti, or quetzel may await you. Spend the day in this rare wilderness, with its vast expanse of primary growth forest and extensive network of trails. Also tour the organic coffee farm founded by German immigrants, and the gardens yielding fresh foods served at the lodge. Selva Negra Mountain Resort (B,L,D)
Day 4, Tue: Selva Negra / Esteli / Leon Depart to the Cordillera Isabella and Esteli, home of Central America’s finest cigars. Learn about rolling, fermentation, and how this industry brought many Cubans to the region, whose cooking you enjoy for lunch. Continue through the Maribios volcanic range to colorful, cultural Leon and your beautiful hotel within a restored 17th century convent. El Convento (B,L)
Day 5, Wed: Leon Tour the colonial and cultural sights of Leon, a wonderful city to explore. Visit the cathedral, a magnificent mistake according to legend, designed by the Spanish for Lima, Peru but somehow built here after a mix-up of plans. All around are colorful murals, churches, and museums such as the home of poet Ruben Dario, that tell the story of Leon and its people. Enjoy a seafood lunch along the crashing Pacific shore. El Convento (B,L)
Day 6, Thu: Leon Viejo / Masaya Volcano / Granada Take a walk among the ruins of Leon Viejo, the original Spanish capital, destroyed by an earthquake in 1610. Continue to colonial Granada, detouring en route at Masaya Volcano National Park with its surreal lava moonscapes, five cones, and smoldering crater with a colony of green parrots. Arrive in colonial Granada. La Gran Francia (B,L)
Day 7, Fri: Granada Bask in the past in the plazas and arcaded lanes of Granada, with its grand colonial residences in a rainbow of pastels, and its scenic location on Lake Nicaragua. Then depart to the highlands of La Meseta, visiting folkloric villages and the workshops of Indian artisans in Catarina, San Juan de Oriente, and Masatepe. Descend to the lake for a private boat trip around its lush tropical islands, rich in wildlife and history. La Gran Francia (B,L)
