In spite of its geo-political world prominence, Panama remains somewhat off the traveler's path. This country offers lush rain forests and volcanoes, more primates than the Amazon, indigenous cultures, unspoiled colonial towns, islands and beaches.

Tour Panama City and the Miraflores Locks in the Panama Canal, and boat across Gantun Lake, passing by gigantic cargo ships transiting the waterway. In contrast, travel by dugout canoe up the Chagres River to the Indian village of Embera Drua and learn about their age-old traditions.

Stay in the lovely San Blas Islands, a region administered by the Kuna, determined to protect their native culture. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the Kuna firsthand. You'll have time here to snorkel in the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea.

Finca Lerida is a private reserve near Baru Volcano National Park. While hiking through the lush vegetation, be on the lookout for the elusive Resplendent Quetzal and other species in their cool habitat of orchids, bromeliads and wild avocados.

Bridging both Panama and Costa Rica, La Amistad World Biosphere Reserve contains an unusually large concentration of ecosystems. Search for an incredible variety of birds and other wildlife that are sheltered in this 2,000 square mile tropical park.
