Suffolk Coast Hotels, Historical Inns. Luxury Tours, Travel Packages
Although rich in rivers, the coastal region of Suffolk was not able to develop any major North Sea ports due to coastal erosion. Dunwich, for example, an important port in the Middle Ages with a large number of monasteries, is today below sea level.
Further south is Aldeburgh, a favorite holiday resort with good hotels. Every summer, the town hosts the Aldeburgh Music Festival, founded in 1948 by British composer Benjamin Britten, who lived here until his death in 1976.
At the mouth of the river Deben is one of the largest freight ports in Britain, Felixstowe. There's regular ferry service to the Continent from here and from neighboring Harwich.
In the past, however, it was the port of Ipswich which was the more important transportation hub. Worth seeing here is the Ancient House in the Buttermarket, which is decorated with a wealth of ornate Baroque stuccowork. Also well worth a visit is the Christchurch Mansion in Christchurch Park in the north part of the city center. It now houses an art gallery with works by Constable and Gainsborough.
The region west of Ipswich is known as "Constable Country," as it was both the home and inspiration of the works of the famous landscape painter John Constable. Constable was born the son of a miller in 1776 in East Bergholt. He studied painting in London, but kept returning, time and again, to his beloved homeland to paint there. Thus were created such works as The Millstream, which hangs in the Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich, or Flatford Mill, depicting the painter's place of birth (in the Tate Gallery, London).
The other great painter of East Anglia, Thomas Gainsborough, was born in Sudbury, also on the Stour, in 1727, the son of a clothmaker. His birthplace at 43 Gainsborough Street become a museum in 1958; here, you can see not only a number of his drawings, engravings and some of his paintings, but also private memorabilia. Unlike Constable, Gainsborough painted portraits, which had the advantage of being a dependable source of income.
