Practical Bulgaria Where To Stay
Bulgaria has some 300 international hotels, half located in the Black Sea resorts. In all major cities and tourist areas there are first-class hotels, many jointly managed with Western partners. In Sofia, you can stay at deluxe hotels like the Balkan and the Sofia, or the first-class Rila, Europa, Rodina and Grand Sofia. Rates start at approximately $50 for a single and $80 for a double.
Transportation
Arriving & Departing: There is nonstop service between New York and Sofia, and regular service to Sofia from major European cities. Express trains to European centers run frequently. Bulgaria collects a border-crossing fee of $23 per person.
Currency can be exchanged in unlimited quantities at the exchange bureaus in major hotels and resort areas and at most banks. Banks are open weekdays from 8 a.m. to noon. The lev is divided into 100 stotinki. $1= 2.02 BGL as of March 22, 2000.
Attractions
Rila Monastery (10th century), 70 miles south of Sofia. In a spectacular mountain setting, it is guarded by stone gates and has sunlit verandas.
National History Museum, Sofia. The Panagjurishte collection of ornaments includes the world's oldest gold dinnerware and jewelry (4600 B.C.}.
Bachkovo Monastery, near Plovdiv. Founded in 1083, it contains 11th-century murals. Nearby are the Archangel St. Michael Church (12th century) and the Church of the Holy Virgin (17th century).
Something Special
Bulgaria supplies 80 percent of the rose oil for the world's perfume industries from the 75-mile Valley of Roses, an enormous natural garden, at the foot of the impressive Balkan mountains. Budding takes place between the end of May and mid-June. The colorful age-old Festival of Roses, centered on Kazanluùk, is held on the first weekend in June. Thousands witness the parade of flowers, and the coronation of the rose queen, and enjoy entertainment of every description. Special tours are offered.
Entertainment
Bulgaria is known for its well-preserved folk customs. Have dinner at a folk tavern with live song and dance, and sample the acclaimed local wine. The country's opera and ballet are famous.
Food & Drink
The cuisine is basically simple but well prepared. It is chiefly distinguished for imaginative meat dishes - lamb, pork, beef - and for its use of yogurt in cooking. Yogurt was first made in Bulgaria.
The red wines of Bulgaria are famous throughout Europe.
Shopping
Explore the boutiques on the winding cobblestone streets and you will find chic clothing, antiques, icons, leather goods, jewelry, musical instruments and peasant needlecrafts.
