Erlangen Museums
Housed in the town hall in the old quarter, Erlangen's municipal museum documents the history of the town. International contemporary art is the subject of the exhibitions in the municipal gallery. Municipal Museum in the Old Town Hall The municipal museum in the old quarter's former town hall covers the history of the town from the first evidence of human habitation in the Erlangen area to the 1950s. It also has special exhibitions on municipal, social and cultural history, and on the fine arts. The museum's collection on Huguenot hosiery weavers, glove makers, whittawers and carpetmakers is of national importance Closed on Mondays, Good Friday and Easter Monday. Guided tours on request. Municipal Art Gallery Since its opening in 1974, the Municipal Art Gallery has staged single-artist exhibitions of international contemporary art displaying a total of more than 4,500 works from the genres of fine art, photography, new media, pop art, minimal art, arte povera, land art, art informel, conceptual art, Fluxus, architecture and design. The gallery also focuses on the way in which art forms interact with one another and with popular culture. Its contemporary international programme includes major art movements such as post-1945 international art. Young artists from Erlangen and its surroundings contribute their own range of work. Closed on Mondays, guided tours on request.
