Heidelberg Nature & greenery The University's botanical gardens, one of the oldest university gardens in Germany, are a popular attraction that is open all year round. The castle gardens are a brilliant architectural achievement dating back to the time of counts and electors. The Neckarwiese park right on the banks of the romantic river Neckar is a delightful spot with pleasant lawns and mature trees.The Castle Gardens When they were created, the geometrically laid out terraces of Heidelberg Castle's "Hortus Palatinus" gardens were considered by contemporaries to be the "eighth wonder of the world". In the south-east corner of the gardens is the large grotto with its lavish fountains and walls abundantly covered with polished stones, shells and coral. The botanical gardens of the University of Heidelberg Founded in 1593 as a medicinal herb garden, the botanical gardens are the oldest of their kind in Germany. The greenhouses contain unique collections. Outdoors, visitors will discover a broad range of interesting vegetation types such as bog, moorland, alpine garden, fern ravine, inland dune, natural vineyard and carefully maintained areas. Neckarwiese Park The Neckarwiese Park stretches for around a kilometre along the north bank of the river Neckar. In summer this is a lovely place to enjoy the sun, play sports or hold barbecue parties. |
