Nuremberg Nature & greenery

Visit Nuremberg's zoo with its naturalistic enclosures and the only dolphinarium in southern Germany. Its 63-hectare site makes it Europe's largest zoo. The Hesperides gardens date back to the 17th and 18th centuries and evolved from the cottage gardens of the Middle Ages.

Nuremberg zoo
The zoo is one of the most attractive landscaped zoos in Europe. There are ponds near the entrance for wading birds, the predatory animals live in dens hewn out of the rock, wild horses from all corners of the globe live here alongside elephants and hippopotamuses. Sea cows can be seen in the tropical house.

Dolphinarium in the zoo
Southern Germany's only dolphinarium contains large sea lions as well as dolphins. During the show, audiences learn about biological principles and the daily care of these animals.

Hesperides gardens
Delightful public gardens from the 17th and 18th centuries. The baroque gardens contain the Four Seasons fountain, the Arion fountain, the sculptures "Die Jugend" (Youth), "Das Laster" (The Vice) and "Die Zwerggrotesken" (The Dwarf Grotesques) and a remarkable sundial. The gardens were once home to 50 different varieties of citrus plants. The Hesperides gardens are named after the Hesperides (daughters of Hesperos), who guarded the golden apples in Greek mythology.
