Crystal Road

A warm welcome to the Bavarian and Upper Palatinate Forests, the home of the Crystal Road. It covers around 450 kilometres between Lindau on Lake Constance and Berchtesgaden on Lake Königssee close to the border with Austria.
German Avenues Route

Travelling along Germany's tree-lined avenues is a wonderful feeling, rather like being in a series of green tunnels. Centuries-old trees line both sides of the roads like threads of green, their arching branches touching and intertwining overhead. From Cape Arkona on the island of Rügen in the north of Germany to Reichenau island on Lake Constance in the south, this route passes beneath this leafy canopy, which the sunlight only penetrates here and there.
German Ceramics Route

The Ruppiner Land region is an area of wide-open skies, green forests, lush meadows, yellow fields, crystal-clear lakes, winding streams and cobbled roads typical of the Brandenburg Marches. It is the ideal place to relax and unwind and has some fascinating discoveries in store. Thick layers of banded clay were deposited here towards the end of the Ice Age. Clays are sedimentary rocks composed mainly of clay minerals (weathered feldspar).

German Wine Route

The German Wine Route, the first of Germany's scenic routes and still its most famous, runs through the country's second-largest wine-growing region and offers 85 kilometres of pure, unadulterated enjoyment. Whether Schweigen-Rechtenbach in the south is the start or the finish of the route is immaterial: many visitors enjoy it so much that, on reaching the German wine route gateway there, they simply do an about-turn and do the tour again in reverse, back up to Bockenheim.
Green Route / Route Verte

The cross-border Green Route, which was set up as long ago as 1960 in the spirit of Franco-German cooperation, is a milestone on the path towards a united Europe. It is a 250-kilometre "ribbon of friendship" running from Contrexéville in the Vosges mountains through Alsace and Lorraine to Titisee-Neustadt in the Black Forest mountains.
Historic Oxen Trail

The cyclist-friendly, 500 kilometre Historic Oxen Trail from Wedel outside Hamburg to Viborg in Denmark – or vice versa - is a great way to see the beauty of north Germany in the region between the North Sea and the Baltic. Here, in the enchanting Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site where the Rhine carves its meandering way through the Hunsrück and Taunus hills, is the famous Loreley rock. The narrowness of the valley, the untamed river waters and the mysterious echo all play their part in the myth of the Loreley, the blond siren on the rock who once lured sailors on the Rhine to their death with her beguiling song and mysterious beauty.
Lower Saxony Asparagus Route

Lower Saxony is famous for its asparagus. In fact, one fifth of all German asparagus is grown here. It therefore seems fitting that there is a tourist route dedicated to this king among vegetables in Lower Saxony - the Lower Saxony Asparagus Route. The asparagus fields are a dominant feature of the region's landscape from as early as March with spears being harvested from the end of April to the end of June (Midsummer's Day).
Lower Saxony Milk Route

Not to be confused with the Milky Way, the Milk Route runs through the sandy heathland, marshes and moors around Stade in Lower Saxony. The Moselle rises in France, then makes its way towards the Rhine, winding this way and that as if slightly tipsy.

The Neckar-Alb Roman Route retraces historical Roman roads and forms a link between a great many interesting classical sites. Excavated sites, monuments and museums all along the route are impressive testimonies to the history of the Roman province of Upper Germania.
Nibelung Siegfried Route

Most people have heard of the Song of the Nibelungs and the story of Siegfried, Kriemhild, Brunhild and Hagen, the account of their life, festivals and feuds. Today, these are still popular themes and the subject of many a historical discussion. The Song of the Nibelungs was a medieval hit that was often recited, especially at events such as medieval tournaments that are frequently re-enacted today.
Northern Black Forest Monasteries Route

"Monastery hopping" might seem a touch irreverent, but unlike "island hopping" it is a calm and contemplative way to travel. Old Salt Road

The "Old Salt Road" - also called the "via regia" or the king's highway - is a long-established trade route about 100 kilometres long running from Lüneburg to Lübeck. Romanesque Route

The "Romanesque Route" is one of Germany's most popular tourist routes. It follows a circuit of over 1,000 kilometres in an area packed with Romanesque architecture dating back to the time when Ottonian emperors ruled Saxony-Anhalt. The Romanesque Route is made up of two sections which run from Arendsee in the north to Zeitz in the south, linking 60 towns and villages whose total of 72 Romanesque cathedrals, churches, abbeys, castles and palaces attest to the region's political and commercial importance during medieval times.
Romantic Road

For more than 50 years, the hallmark of the Romantic Road has been its wonderful combination of nature, culture and hospitality. Germany's most famous and popular tourist route runs for 350 romantic kilometres across a rich and varied cultural landscape along the river Main and through the Franconian wine country to the Alps.
Route of Industrial Heritage

Wine making has played a special role in this region for at least 1,000 years.
Saxon Silver Mines Route

Europe's largest open-air museum welcomes you with a hearty "Glück auf!" (Good luck!), the traditional miner's greeting. Saxony was once the richest region in the Holy Roman Empire. One of its rulers was even called Otto the Rich (1156-1190). The Silver Mines Route, Saxony's first signposted scenic route, runs for approx.
Saxon Wine Route

The wine-making region between Pirna and Diesbar-Seusslitz near Meissen is a remarkable part of Saxony. Everything here revolves around wine, whether you are just calling in at one of its traditional taverns for a drink, celebrating at the autumn wine festivals or touring its 20 or so wineries.
Schleswig-Holstein Cheese Route

Wind, waves, coastal mudflats and flat sandy beaches are characteristic of Schleswig-Holstein's western side. The east is shaped by cliffs, bays and narrow inlets cut deep into the land. The constant ebb and flow of the tide and the region's spectacular sunsets still greatly influence the rhythm of people's lives. You can smell the salt in the air; fine, therapeutic particles coming off the sea.
Sisi's Road

The eastern section of Sisi's Road from the Wittelsbacher Land region in Bavaria to Budapest is 800 kilometres long and connects the places that played a special role in the life of Elisabeth, the empress of Austria and later queen of Hungary. The second section of about 500km runs south from Augsburg via Füssen, into Italy taking in Trauttmansdorff Castle, notable for its gardens, and Levico Terme on its way to Miramar Castle near Trieste. Elisabeth Amalie-Eugenie - known affectionately as Sisi - was born in Munich on Christmas Eve 1837.

Swabian Alb Route

The Swabian Alb - a striking highland region that rose up out of the Jurassic sea millions of years ago, features a combination of bizarre rock formations and gently rolling slopes. Where now the sheep graze peacefully among the juniper bushes, glowing molten rock once bubbled up into the sky: millions of years ago, the Swabian Alb was one of the most volcanic regions on earth.
Swedish Heritage Route

The 700km Swedish Heritage Route examines the cultural history of the Swedes in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg. It connects locations where Swedes have left their mark in various ways throughout history. The route was created in 2000 on the initiative of the Swedish embassy with the aim of strengthening contacts between Sweden and Germany's north-eastern states based on their shared history.
The Legendary Rhine-Romantic-Route

Following the 1,320-km course of the Rhine from its source in Switzerland to the river's mouth in the North Sea, the most interesting section is without doubt the Middle Rhine and the Rhine Valley between Mainz and Bonn. Here, where the Rhine carves its way through the slate mountains between Bingen and Koblenz..
Via Claudia Augusta

Almost 2,000 years ago the Romans built their only imperial road across the Alps - the Via Claudia Augusta. It stretched from the Adriatic town of Altinum near Venice and the ancient ferry port of Hostiglia (now Ostiglia on the river Po) across the Reschen Pass and the Fern Pass to the Danube. This 500 kilometre military supply route was for centuries the most important connection between the Roman motherland and its rich provinces to the north.

Weser Marshes Route

The Weser Marshes Route is a circuit of about 200 kilometres from Nordenham via Brake, Lernwerder, Meerkirchen, Jaderberg, Tossensand and back to Nordenham. It passes through the amazing scenery of the Weser marshland with its peat moors, riverbank scenery and lush green salt marshes populated by flocks of snowy white sheep.

Weser Renaissance Route

Welcome to the Weser Renaissance Route. But what exactly is "Weser Renaissance"? The Weser Renaissance museum at Brake Castle near Lemgo illustrates and explains the term, which can be misleading as it might suggest a separate regional variant of the Renaissance style. Actually, the Renaissance buildings in the Weser region are evidence of the connections that existed throughout Europe at that time, and which made it possible for the architecture and the ideas of the Renaissance to spread from Italy to the countries north of the Alps.

Westphalian Mills Route

A tour along the Minden-Lübbecke Westphalian Mills Route is also a way of winding the clock back to the turn of the 20th century when windmills, watermills and treadmills were still used to grind the grain for people's daily bread. Nowhere in Germany is the art of milling – and the story of inventive technical genius – portrayed as instructively and in such diversity as in this area of fields, meadows and parks between the Wiehengebirge hills and the River Weser and Lake Dümmer.
