Mecklenburg State Theatre
Today, the Mecklenburg State Theatre, housed in an Italianate Renaissance-style structure, ranks among north Germany's most acclaimed and professional theatres. The theatre has a great tradition of staging opera, concerts, ballet and drama. Its Castle Festival is one of the highlights of Schwerin's annual Summer of Culture.
Schwerin Castle Festival
Schwerin's Old Gardens with their peerless architectural ensemble comprising the State Theatre, State Museum and the romantic fairy-tale castle form a breathtaking backdrop for the festival. Operas are performed here every year by internationally acclaimed soloists, choirs and the distinguished Mecklenburg Staatskapelle Schwerin.
Schwerin's arts centre: Schleswig Holstein House
Until 1843, this old brick building was an inn. Now the town's arts centre, it houses permanent exhibitions of art, photography, prints and paintings. Readings, debates and concerts complete the cultural mix. The arts centre has recently evolved into a venue for a wide range of exhibitions and events.
