 As home of the German National Theatre and the Weimar State Orchestra, the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, the Thuringian Bach Festival and the Weimar Art Collections, Weimar is a town with a richly varied cultural life.
German National Theatre and Weimar State Orchestra
As its first theatre director, Goethe established Weimar's reputation for theatre which is closely connected with the cultural history of the town. The German National Theatre is still renowned for staging drama, opera and dance theatre. The famous monument to Goethe and Schiller stands in front of the theatre.
Franz Liszt Academy of Music
Weimar's music academy stages large-scale public events to showcase the talent of its members, in academy and chamber orchestras, choirs and jazz band, operatic and oratorio projects. Every autumn, young musicians travel from all over the world to take part in competitions. The Weimar Liszt Festival, a highpoint in Thuringia's musical life, takes place every three years.
Weimar Art Collections
The Weimar Art Collections housed at four separate sites, the Palace Museum, the Bauhaus Museum, the New Museum and Belvedere Palace together make up the most important art museum in the Free State of Thuringia.
