Poland time: In winter, Poland is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). From the end of March to the end of September, daylight saving means that Poland is two hours ahead of GMT.
British and United States passport holders can enter Poland without a visa and stay for 90 days. Most other nationals need to apply for a visa before you leave for Poland. There are three types of visas: a 24-hour transit visa which allows you simply to pass through Poland en route to somewhere else. a single entry visa which allows you to remain in Poland for 90 days, although you cannot re-enter within this period once you leave. a double entry visa allows you to re-enter Poland once during your 90 day limit.
Currency: Poland's currency is the zloty (PLN). There are 100 grosz to a zloty. The currency denominations have changed since 1995, and only the new notes are valid today. They come in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 zlotys, while coins come in denominations of 1, 2, and 5 zloty. Smaller coins include: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 groszy. Remember, the old notes are no longer valid. A PLN2,000,000.00 note is worthless.
There are a number of places you can exchange currency. The places that offer hassle-free service at the best rates are the small kantors. You'll notice them quickly enough: little shops and temporary stalls dotted everywhere. They operate during business hours, although the more entrepreneurial ones are open later. One drawback of dealing with these kantors is that they do not often stock a wide variety of currencies and can be a bit squeamish about exchanging unusual ones. Banks offer a wider range of currencies, but their rates aren't as good and there is far more red-tape involved.
Traveller's cheques are more difficult to exchange than cash. Kantors aren't interested and banks are just slow and irritating, and not all banks offer such exchanges anyway. The best place is the American Express. There are offices in Warsaw and in Krakow.
Credit cards are beginning to work in Poland, although your everyday transactions can't be charged. Large institutions such as airlines and rental agencies will most likely let you charge. Other well-to-do retailers and restaurants accept the usual big-name credit cards.
Business hours: Shops are generally open from 08:00 to 19:00, Monday to Friday, and from 08:00 to 14:00 on Saturdays. You will, however find that some specialist shops are open from 11:00 to 19:00.
Businesses and banks are usually open from 08:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday.
Post offices are open from 07:00 to 20:00, Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 14:00 on Saturdays, and from 09:00 to 11:00 on Sundays.
Telephones: Poland has a very outdated telephone service. You must buy phone cards, then purchase telephone coins with it. Mobile phones will work around major cities---sometimes, but are improving daily. Patience neccessary.
In general Poland is a bargain for travelers. |
