Our Matangi Island Treehouse Bures have been created especially for couples. Built 30 feet off the ground in the branches of a large tree, each has a large bedroom, bath and sitting room surrounded by windows looking out over the trees and aquamarine waters of the Tasman Straits to the islands of Taveuni and Vanua Levu. A superb view. Each morning you awake to the sound of birds and a cooling sea breeze. A private verandah is a romantic location for viewing the Matangi Island sunset or the stars over a bottle of champagne.
You can choose to spend your Matangi Island honeymoon days together with a specially prepared private picnic on magnificent Horseshoe Bay, (only accessible by boat) or at Bouma Falls on Taveuni Island, sunbathing on the white sand beach in front of your Treehouse, strolling through our gardens and enjoying a private dinner for two on the beach. Or, you may prefer to hike around the island, visit a local Fiji village, scuba dive or snorkel and join the other guests for dinner to share stories about the day's
activities.

The first time I stepped on to the beach of this privately owned 240 acre island retreat, I had to pinch myself back to reality!
Matangi Island Resort & Accomodations
 We were greeted by a friendly Fijian smile and a fresh coconut drink with a bright red hibiscus dangling off the side, the staff lead us through the beautiful gardens of this South Pacific paradise to the office. After we had checked in, our Fijian hostess guided us to our beachfront bure, where we are shown the amenities of our 900 square ft bungalow "bure". With a coffee and tea making facility and mini bar we were set to brew fresh Fijian coffee as the sun rose the next morning. A refreshing Fijian beer enjoyed on our private covered verandah was my poison at sunset that night. As the days unfolded, we where truly pampered by the Douglas family and their 45 staff members. After a delicious breakfast of fresh tropical fruits and juices along with the cooked to order fares, we went scuba diving.
Fiji's SCUBA Diving
 The comfortable dive boats, including the Marama Ni Matangi and the Lady Christene are a joy to dive from. On any given day, Matangi's uncrowded dive boats take up to 12 lucky dives. On this trip there were usually only 6-8 divers on the boat. Matangi's excellent Fijian dive guides took us to dramatic walls that are covered with multi-hued soft corals and thousands of tropical fish.
The boats made our diving effortless with easy on and off dive decks. Matangi's guides spoil you by taking care of your gear before and after the dives and serving you a snack of cookies and coffee or tea in-between dives. If you don't have your own dive gear... no problem... the resort has it to rent at reasonable rates. For those hard core divers that just can't get enough Matangi has shore diving available day or night a few steps walk from the dive shop.
Matangi Island Activities
 Afternoons were filled with activities organized by the resort. A trip to a neighboring island to visit a Fijian village is a must. We sat with the local villagers and their chief sharing the traditional Kava ceremony . The village visit encounter is an experience not to be missed. My first taste of the age old custom drink Kava or "grog" as the locals say, was of a numbing sensation and I thought I had just drank dirty sock water! Through the years this drink has grown on me and now I am know as the Kava Queen of Matangi.
 We also had BBQ's in Matangi's beautiful Horseshoe Bay. After a fabulous lunch we snorkeled on the hard coral reefs to rid us of our excess calories. This beautiful bay can be reserved by any couple for a private picnic lunch, a romantic time that will live on and on in your memories.
For those more adventurous Matangi visitors there are complimentary sailboats, wind surfers, and kayaks, located right at the beach.
The Aqua staff are always eager to help with any of the activities. After a rest and relaxing moment watching another day end, we gather at the dining bure to share stories of the days events with the other guests. If you want some time alone Matangi will arrange a private dinner on the beach by candle light or in your bure.
 To really spoil yourself try staying in one of Matangi's "treehouse" bures. One is located 30 feet off the ground, in a Pacific Almond tree and the other one up on a cliffside. Both bures have wonderful views of the islands of Qamea and Taveuni across the Tasman Straits and plenty of privacy. They also feature outdoor and indoor showers, luxuriously appointed decor and fresh flowers daily. You get the feeling that for a short time you own a piece of your own South Seas paradise.

Barefoot Luxury, Bures and Resort Features
 The Douglas family welcomes you to this private island with intimate thirteen bure resort tucked between the cliffs of Matangi Island and the aquamarine waters of the Tasman Straits. We strive to make your holiday carefree and comfortable by providing services and activities to accommodate your desires.
When you arrive at Matangi Island you will scarcely notice a resort hidden among the many trees and gardens along the beach. Our guests reside in 13 individual bures (Fijian style bungalows) scattered around a central area where our dining and activities center nestle in the tropical foliage. From each bure it is a short walk to the beach, dining or activities center, but far enough to provide privacy.
The buildings (bures) are constructed in typical Fijian style and nestled under the palms and along the white sand beach of this former plantation island. The resort looks like a nicely groomed Fijian village. However, we provide the luxuries of a first class hotel, a first class hotel where you can leave your shoes in your baggage if you wish!
 Each bure has a large bath area with a hot shower and is supplied twice a day with plenty of fluffy towels. Hairdryers are available on request. A comfortable sitting area (separated from the bedroom in the deluxe and treehouse bures) accommodates a mini-bar always stocked with soft drinks, wine, and beer as well as locally grown Fijian coffee and tea service.
We provide soft terrycloth bathrobes which you will find hanging in a large closet beside the queensize bed. Each night, your bed will be turned down and the lacy mosquito net tucked around it like a cocoon. If the sea breeze is not sufficient to cool your bure, you can use the ceiling fan we provide. The architecture of the bures is remarkable, take a look at a bure ceiling.
We offer several types of bungalows including our two treehouse bures, deluxe and standard bures.
Perched atop a small hill in a garden overlooking the beach and sea, our one double bure is extra large and divided into two sections adjoined by an internal door for groups or large families.
Laundry: Just drop your laundry in the hamper beside the bed and it will be returned to you, clean and folded, at no extra charge. 240V electrical outlets (3 prong) are located throughout the bure.
