Visiting the Loire Valley with your kids is akin to taking them on vacation in a fairy tale. Explore “the garden of France,” where around every turn lie châteaux that transport you back to the days of masquerade balls and tournaments. Of course, pedalling past the magnificent playgrounds of knights and ladies is one thing, but we’re the guests of honour in a luxury château of our own.

And, as with any With the Kids trip, enjoying the Loire Valley means spending time together and apart. You decide what to do: bike a longer route, lounge by the pool or join the kids in the afternoon for something decidedly medieval – en garde!

When the château was built in the 15th century, its white tuffa limestone was quarried from below the site. The long ramp that once allowed stone to be brought out of the ground now provides access to the wine cellars below.

Château de Verrières, Saumur
This elegant 19thC residence, which opened as a hotel in 2003, is run by Thierry and Yolaine de Valbray-Auger. We are sure to feel at home here, as we are the only guests during our stay. Conveniently situated in the historic centre of Saumur, Verrières is a private mansion boasting its own gardens and swimming pool, and large, airy bedrooms with luxurious bathrooms.
