HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The treasure of the « Knights of the Templar »...
An extraordinary legend - a golden goat worshipped by the Knights is said to be buried on the estate.
Since Roman times, the unusual position held by the St Martin estate, perched high on the hills of Vence on the French Riviera overlooking the Mediterranean, was the reason for building a fortified stronghold.
In 350, Saint Martin, Bishop of Tours and Evangelist to the Gauls, arrived and settled on this estate which subsequently took his name.
In 1115, the Count of Provence handed over the estate to the Crusaders returning from Jerusalem on the condition that they protect the region and work on the land.
The Knights of the Templar set up their fortress on the site of the Roman stronghold - the impressive drawbridge remains to this day.
In 1307, Philip Le Bel ended the order of the Knights burning the leading dignitaries, accusing them of witchcraft, in an attempt to steal their treasure.
