Finally, the visitor should take the D35 southwards, turning left from it to visit Van Gogh's drawbridge over the canal, and should then take the N570 northwards, turning off right along the D17 to visit the abbey of Montmajour.

The abbey was built on rising ground above what had been marshland drained by the monks. Founded in the tenth century, it fell into a long decline and is now being restored. The keep is a powerful and commanding presence, in sharp contrast with the demure twelfth-century cloister and the church, whose crypt is partly hewn out of the rock.

While at the site, do not miss the tiny burial chapel of Ste Croix in the form of a Greek cross in a field just below the abbey. It is a gem of Provençal Romanesque art and is surrounded by tombs cut out of the rock.
