The Alyscamps, Arles Vacations and Luxury Travel Packages

The last significant Roman site is The Alyscamps, the remains of a necropolis that actually survived its original users. The name derives from the Latin Alysii Campi, Elysian fields, the abode of the dead. At the end of the site is a large ruin that was once the church of St Honorat. Over a period of about 900 years ? though chiefly in three periods, in the fourth, eighth and twelfth centuries ? this was one of the most famous necropolises in the world and thousands of burials took place here. In Roman times the Aurelian Way led past the tombstones to reach the gates of the town.

The area's greatest period was post-Roman, however, when miracles were said to have occured around the tomb of St Genesius, beheaded by the Romans. As the fame of Genesius spread, more and more Christians demanded to be buried here. The site was later used as a convenient quarry but the best of the stone tombs can now be seen in the Museum of Christian Art. The Museum of Pagan Art holds the better objects from Arles' pre-Christian period.
