The Roman and medieval impressions gained in Arles
can be extended by visiting St Gilles and Nîmes in Gard. St Gilles, 10 miles (16km) west of Arles on the N572, was also a stopping-place for pilgrims on their way to St James of Compostela. Three rounded doors fill the entire width of the west front of the abbey-church, and the effect is even more impressive than at St Trophime. Indeed, the west front is thought by many to be the finest example of Romanesque sculpture in southern France. The carvings surrounding them were completed in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries and depict scenes from the life of Christ, together with some scenes from the Old Testament. St Gilles' tomb is in the crypt which is an early example (eleventh-century) of ogival vaulting.

A belfry contains a spiral staircase ? Le Vis de St Gilles ? whose fifty steps are roofed with stone like a curving tunnel, an early example of the stonemason's craft. It is said that stonemasons come from far afield in order to view the staircase, so perfect is its execution, some of them leaving graffiti on the stonework. Close to the abbey, the Maison Romane is worth visiting. The house, birthplace of Guy Foulque, elected Pope Clement IV in 1265, has an interesting collection of excavated stonework from St Gilles Abbey and a collection of tools from old local crafts.
