Uzès, where the water for Nîmes started its journey, is a fine town, virtually a living museum of seventeenth and eighteenth-century architecture. The town became rich through its interests in the silk trade and there is a superb street of fine houses around every corner. The Ducal Palace overshadows everything, an excellent castle with sections dating from between the eleventh and the seventeenth centuries. From the top of the Palace's Bermonde Tower - reached by a spiral staircase of almost 150 steps - the view of the town and the garrigue landscape that surrounds it is excellent. To the south of the Palace is the old clocktower, dating from the twelfth century and topped by a delightfully wrought-iron bell cage, and, on again, the picturesque, arcaded Place aux Herbes.
Opposite the Palace's north-east corner is the Crypt, an early Christian cell hacked out of the rock and with a carved relief of John the Baptist.

Ahead, across the main road, is the ex-cathedral of St Théodorit, built in the seventeenth century but remodelled 200 years later. To the right of the cathedral is the Tour Fenestrelle, dating from the twelfth century and unique in France as a round bell-tower. The tower, named for its numerous windows, is all that remains of an earlier cathedral destroyed during the Wars of Religion.
Beside the tower the Promenade Jean-Racine offers a shady walk and fine views of the country to the south. The name commemorates the seventeenth century writer who spent a formative year in Uzès.
Finally, those visitors with an interest in horses can visit the French National Stud which lies about 2 miles (3.5 kms) outside the town beside the D981 to Alès.
The distance from Roman Orange to medieval Avignon is less than 18 miles (30km) . Take the D68 which reaches a village in 6miles (10km) whose name is familiar to every wine-lover - Chteauneuf-du-Pape. Rows of green vines rise out of a sea of large pebbles once rolled by the Rhône. They act as a furnace which reflects the sun's heat onto the ripening grapes that produce the well-known red wine. Up to thirteen varieties of grape may be used in making the wine. As might be expected, there is a museum to the wine trade in the town.
Above the village are the imposing ruins of a four-teenth-century castle built by Pope John XXII as his summer residence. It has been plundered down the years, the last assault was by German troops who blew up most of the huge keep in 1944. |
