Mt. Parnitha
|
This is the highest mountain in Attica Prefecture at 1,400 meters, 20km north of the city. The National Park of Mt. Parnitha is a place enjoyable and peaceful nature with the rest of the Athenians.
You can go there by road to the mountain, or you can also take |
the cable car, know as "teleferic", for a fantastic view and great sensations.
Moni Kaissarianis
Moni Kaissarianis, an 11th century monastery on the slopes of the lovely Mount Hymettos.
There is a big play park for children, a lot of trees and an incredible choice of wonderful smelling flowers.
Eleusina
Eleusina occupied a very important place in history, as for many centuries, it has been, along with Delphi and Delos one of the greatest cultural centers of the ancient world.
It is interesting to go there just to visit the site of ancient Eleusis, which was built around the Sanctuary of Demeter, who was the figure from who was born one of the most important cult in Ancient Greece. During classical times, on a huge annual festival, thousands of pilgrims walked in procession along the Sacred Way, from the Acropolis to Eleusis, wanting to be initiated into the Eleusian mysteries.
Poros Island
The island of Poros offers some good restaurants and a wonderful view over the mountains of Argolis. It is a very popular weekend destination for most of Athenians and it has a quite pretty town with white houses.
Cape Sounion

i s one of the most famous and picturesque places in Attica and is located 69 km southeast of at the southernmost point of Attica peninsula.
The Temple of Poseidon, built on a site set back from the sheer cliffs and with its magnificent view of the Aegean Sea and islands, was ideally located for worship of the powerful god of the sea. In ancient times, mariners would see the brilliant white marble columns of the Temple of Poseidon and know they were close to home. |
Corinth
Corinth history is obscure until the early 8th century BCE, when the city-state of Corinth began to develop as a commercial center. Until it was eclipsed by Athens in the 5th century BCE, Corinth was the biggest and wealthiest classical Greek city-state, with two bustling ports, a famous ceramics industry and distant colonies in Syracuse in Sicily and Kerkyra on Corfu.
Rafina

The port of Rafina, the second most important port of departures for the Greek islands.
Rafina is a good place to go for the night to eat some nice fresh fish in one of the many fish taverns with a view on the sea. |
Aegina Island

Aegina Island located in Saronic Gulf, only 17,5 nautical miles from Piraeus (Athens Port). It is the ideal place for weekend or a daily cruise but and a favorite summer resort.

Hydra Island

Hydra lies between the Saronic and Argolis Gulf and is 37 nautical miles from Piraeus, which are covered by ship in 3 hours and by hydrofoil in half time hour.
No motorized transports are allowed in Hydra. It is a peaceful and quite place to enjoy a walk, a coffee, a meal or a drink. |
Hydra has a unique beauty in its architecture and its landscape, taken together with its proximity to Athens and its important historical interest, have gradually raised the island to the level of an international tourist centre. |
Andros Island

C yclades, Andros is the second biggest cyclade islands after Naxos.
The 12 foot water around the reef suddenly plunges 6000 feet into the Tongue of the Ocean, and contains colorful marine life of nearly all species, some of the world's deepest blue holes, and spectacular coral gardens and underwater cavern. |
Kea or Tzia Island

This exceptionally picturesque island lies close to the south-east coast of Attica. Kea is another favorite weekend destination for a lot of Athenians. It has some very nice beaches and an interesting architecture.
Built in the shape of an amphitheater, it presents the visitor with an impressive vista of two-story houses and tiled roofs, steep cobbled alleyways and splendid churches with elaborately carved wooden icon screens.
