The Islands Of Inspirtion
As an artist, Pegge Hopper thinks the islands are a painter's paradise. "I moved here in 1963," says Pegge. "I had never been to Hawaii before and when I arrived, it was love at first sight. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made," she reflects.Pegge Hopper was born in California, where she studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. After living and working in Milan for two years, she sought the perfect place to raise her family. She ended up settling down in Oahu.
"I am best known for my acrylic paintings and charcoal drawings, but I also experiment with other mediums," shares Pegge. "The inspiration for my work is based on graphic design and the beauty of Hawaii and its people."."Hop on the bus and go to Kailua beach in the late afternoon," she urges. "As the sun sets behind the Koolau Mountains, it's magical. The beautiful white sand feels like a fine oriental carpet. The water is so warm you can hardly tell that it's lapping at your ankles."
"And then," she adds, "be sure to look up - look up at the sky. We have got the most beautiful skies in the world. It gives me goose bumps just talking about it!".The next time you're in Honolulu, be sure to visit the Pegge Hopper Gallery in the heart of Chinatown. It's a perfect location, because afterwards, you just might want to enjoy the colorful markets of Chinatown and paint a picture of your own.
The Gallery is open from 11:00 am to 4:00 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. 1164 Nuuanu Street, Honolulu, Hawaii 96817. Ph: (808) 524-1160
