Hawaii, the Big Island, has an area of 4,038 square miles and is the largest of all the Hawaiian Islands. In fact, it is larger than all the other islands combined. The population is 135,500. The County of Hawaii is comprised solely of the Island of Hawaii, with Hilo as the county seat. Hilo's population is 45,000.
Volcanoes
The island has some 266 miles of rugged coastline lava fields, high seacliffs, rocky shores and limited stretches of sandy beach. It rises from sea level to the highest volcanic peaks in the islands, Mauna Kea at 13,796 feet and Mauna Loa at 13,677 feet. These two towering peaks dominate the island. Mauna Loa and adjacent Kilauea Volcano are among the world's most active volcanoes. Kilauea has been in an active phase since 1983, with almost continuous lava eruptions into the sea on the southern side of the island. The Island of Hawaii is the youngest in the chain of islands. The ongoing eruptions of Kilauea, in fact, continue to add to the island's size with buildup of lava on the coastline. As measured by comparison of its structural lava flows, the age of Hawaii is about 700,000 years, very young compared to the other Hawaiian Islands.
