Kona Village Resort, Hawaii Island Vacations, Honeymoons and Luxury Travel Packages

Kona Village lies within the site of an ancient Hawaiian fishing village on 82 private acres at Kahuwai Bay along the Big Island’s Kohala Coast. Established in 1965, the resort is home to 125 thatched-roof bungalows called hale (ha-lay). Each is reflective of Polynesian architectural styles. Nestled around lush lagoons and pristine white and black sand beaches, guests enjoy vacation fun from water sports (snorkeling, diving, kayaking, deep sea fishing and more) to cultural and historical exploration within resort grounds.
Kona Village Resort Accommodations
Kona Village Resort’s 82 oceanfront acres boasts three distinct geological zones we call “Sand,” “Lava,” and “Lagoon.” Within each zone is a variety of our unique, individual thatched roof bungalows, locally called hale (ha-lay). Each is cooled by tropical trade winds and interior ceiling fans, is generously sized and includes thoughtful in-room amenities. A coconut placed outside your door is our Hawaiian-style way of saying “Do Not Disturb.” The serenity and keen sense of place at Kona Village is achieved in part by our lack of radios, telephones and televisions. And the variety of Polynesian architectural styles found throughout the resort means there is a hale in this special place awaiting you.
Sand
This southern section of the resort has hale situated directly on or set back from the beach at Kahuwai Bay. From the Royal Category hale, guests are within steps of legendary Wai ‘O Kane (“Vie O Kah-Nay,” the Waters of Kane), a freshwater spring just beneath the ocean’s surface. Endangered green sea turtles bask on the shoreline each afternoon in this distinctly “Sand” zone of Kona Village, which includes every hale category except Standard. A particularly family-friendly area of the resort, there are various sized hale that easily accommodate families.
Lava
In 1801, Mt. Hualalai erupted sending forth a river of lava that reduced the size of Kahuwai Bay by one-half. The resulting geological formation was dramatic black lava rock cliffs and inlets with amazing pure black sand beaches. With a variety of hale in the Royal, Deluxe and Superior categories, adults and honeymooners in particular appreciate the ocean’s proximity, the stunning views, the ever-present ocean breezes and the many hale in this geological zone that have private Jacuzzi on the lanai (deck).
Lagoon
Distinctly different from the Sand and Lava zones is the area of Kona Village that surrounds the ancient Hawaiian fish ponds. Lushly tropical, with hale that are ideal for families and many that are preferred by honeymooners, the peaceful Lagoon area offers primarily Garden and Standard category hale. Here, the “alarm clocks” are chirping birds each morning, signaling the beginning of a beautiful day at Kona Village.

Paniolo Night BBQ Hawaiian cowboys (Na Paniolo) have played an important role historically and still today on Hawaii’s Big Island. There were paniolo working the open range here on the island before there were cowboys in America’s West. With that in mind, Kona Village Resort shares a bit of paniolo culture with guests.
Each Tuesday evening “Paniolo Night” celebrates the rich culture and heritage of Hawaiian cowboys with great food and entertainment. The tasty menu includes grilled steak, chicken, fresh island fish, beans slow-cooked over an open fire, corn on the cob, salads, desserts and for a nominal extra fee, fresh Kehaole grilled lobster.
Live entertainment features Hawaii’s unique slack-key music and décor befits the evening’s theme. Hardworking Paniolo are on hand to talk story with guests, answer questions and share knowledge and lore about their intriguing lifestyle. Yee-ha! Round up the clan for Paniolo Night at Kona Village.
‘Aha‘aina Each Wednesday and Friday, Kona Village’s aha`aina (feast, or lu‘au) honors old traditions while adopting decidedly upbeat formats.
On Wednesday Hula Mana brings the experience alive with the resort’s legendary ‘Aha‘aina lu‘au. On Friday Savai‘i, Origins of Polynesia provides guests with a vibrant South Pacific lu‘au experience.
Immerse yourself in an authentic cultural journey surrounded by ancient Hawaiian fish ponds. The evening begins with the unveiling of traditionally prepared foods in the imu (Hawaiian earthen oven) or the umu (Polynesian earthen oven). A sumptuous buffet showcases the heritage foods of such as kalua pig, lomi lomi salmon and poi alongside modern favorites such as fresh island fish, tasty chicken and tropical fruits. Enjoy a mai tai or other refreshing libation.
Then it is showtime! Savai‘i includes the Maori songs of New Zealand and unique to New Zealand poi ball dance, the Samoan fire dance, and the hip-shaking Tahitian tamure. Implements, chants and dance during Friday’s Hula Mana reminisce about “Boat Days” of Honolulu, the influence of all of Polynesia in Hawai‘i and the island’s Paniolo (cowboys).
Regardless of the evening, each aha`aina sparkles with energy and the vivacious talent of the performers in an unparalleled open-air setting.
Sunday Brunch The Kona Village culinary experience extends to our Sunday brunch, a true celebration of food. The collection of flavors found nowhere else include pancakes with as many as 40 toppings from which to choose, freshly tossed made to order stir fry, roast prime rib of beef, assorted dim sum, steamed sea food, a raw bar, salads, desserts and so very much more. In the beautiful setting of the open air terrace at Hale Moana, with Kahuwai Bay as the décor, this Sunday Brunch is always special.
