 What to expect: After being welcomed by the gracious staff, guests can wander through an orchid garden to their ocean-view condos. Details such as koa wood doors and an infinity-edge pool set Whalers Cove apart from other resorts. Guests are mostly vacationing couples who appreciate the resort's seclusion and proximity to golf courses and sunny beaches.

Amenity highlights: All accommodations offer ocean views. Guests also enjoy views from the oceanside, infinity-edge pool and adjacent spa tub. A barbeque area with gas grills also faces the ocean. On the east side of the resort, a stairway leads to a safe snorkeling cove full of marine life. Amenities here include complimentary newspapers and beach towels, daily housekeeping, free parking, free local calls, and concierge services.

Insider tip: With its ocean views and fully equipped condos, many guests opt to relax on site. However, the resort's location also offers easy access to Waimea Canyon, which is 24 miles away and easily reachable at sunrise, before the crowds arrive. In the early morning, mists lift as the canyon fills with purple, red, and gold light.

On the east side of the resort, a stairway leads down to a little snorkeling cove frequented by sea turtles.
