Kalalau Trail

Kalalau Trail begins at the end of Kuhio Highway 56 at Haena State Park, Ke`e Beach. This is Kauai's premier hiking trail, leading into some of its most spectacular wilderness along the famed Na Pali Coast. The 11-mile trail passes through five lush valleys, winding along towering seacliffs, isolated beaches and old Hawaiian ruins. The first section, Ke`e Beach to Hanakapiai Beach, is a two-mile walk in, 2½ hours. Side trails lead off into valleys and secluded waterfalls. Midway is a campground for those packing camping gear. No facilities, so hikers must carry water and supplies. The trail ends at Kalalau Beach and return is along the same route. This is a difficult trail, with some stretches over rocky terrain and stream crossings. Muddy and slippery when raining. Camping permits required: Department of Land & Natural Resources, State Parks Division, 3060 Eiwa St., Room 306, Lihue, HI 96766, 808 241-3444.
