Garden of the Gods is a windswept plateau area at the west end of Lana`i. It's reached via the hardpacked red dirt Polihua Road, 6.4 miles, leading off from the Lodge at Koele stables and tennis courts. The route passes through old pineapple fields now converted to cattle grazing. The road eventually comes to the Kanepu`u Forest Reserve, an area of rare native Hawaiian plants and dryland forest maintained by The Nature Conservancy of Hawai`i. There are some 48 native species found in the preserve, including the endangered Lana`i sandalwood, rare Hawaiian gardenia and local cousins of olive and persimmon. Just past the forest reserve, the road goes straight to enter the Garden of the Gods or branches left and downslope to remote Ka`ena Iki Point, site of Ka`ena Heiau, one of Lana`i's largest old Hawaiian temple ruins. As you enter the Garden of the Gods you pass a large stone entry marker sign. The area has numerous interesting rock formations and exposed colorful cliffsides that have been weathered and buffeted by the relentless winds scouring the area. It's a lunar-like landscape. The exposed hillsides and rock formations reveal the very earthy tones of red, rust, russet, yellow and brown. In the early morning or late afternoon sunlight, the place takes on an etheral presence, somewhat befitting its rather lofty name. From this area, the rough jeep trail heads downslope to Polihua Beach noted for its small beach and large sand dunes.
