Lanai History

Legend has it that Lanai was once an evil place, overrun with demons. For nearly 1,000 years after Polynesians settled Hawaii, Lanai remained uninhabited. It wasn't until sometime after 1400 that the evil spirits were driven out by Kaulalaau, exiled son of a West Maui king, and Hawaiians finally came to live on Lanai.

In 1779, Captain James Cook cruised the islands and took note of the many Hawaiians who lived by fishing and raising taro on the south shore of Lanai. Their numbers soon decreased, however, as a result of the internecine wars among the chiefs and kings. The first missionaries arrived in 1835 and found farmers and fishermen the primary residents.

Over the years, Lanai has gone through different stages of development under several different owners. At various times it was a thriving sheep and cattle ranch, a sugarcane plantation and then a pineapple plantation for many years. Because it is such a small island and lacks the resources others have, it has been perceived by some as an inhospitable place. But in the early 1990s two magnificent resorts were built by Castle & Cooke to attract world travelers and tourism may loom large in its future. Before long this small, isolated island may have a new nickname to replace the no-longer-apt "Pineapple Island."
