West Maui Vacations and Luxury Travel Packages Guide
Maui's modern resort industry began at Ka`anapali Beach, where most of the luxury resort hotels are. This was the island's first comprehensive planned resort community and it is still a wonderful place to vacation. Beaches, condos, hotels, golf courses, tennis courts, swimming pools, shopping, restaurants, and more make up the corridor and coast of West Maui from Lahaina to Kapalua.
Lahaina, the old whaling port and early capital of the Hawaiian Islands is the center of action for most tourists. This quaint town, nestled along Front Street and the harbor area is a historic place with a number of attractions dating from the early 1800s - its whaling and early missionary heyday. This is where some of the first Christian missionaries from America took up residence, converting the Hawaiians and battling the wretched whaling seamen who wallowed in drink and debauchery when in port at Lahaina. The whaling and nautical theme is still evident everywhere in town. The Lahaina Harbor is still busy with visitors shuttling back and forth across the Au`au Channel to Lana`i, while others embark on fishing charters or go for a sail. The Pioneer Inn next to the Lahaina Harbor is a favorite watering hole for the younger crowd, and has very good local entertainment in the afternoons and evenings.
