It is believed that the first Polynesians arrived on Oahu before 1000 AD. The Hawaiians followed their communal lifestyle over the generations and were subservient to the ruling alii (kings and chiefs). Oahu remained an independent kingdom until Kamehameha the Great from the Island of Hawaii invaded and conquered the defenders in a decisive battle at the Nuuanu Valley in 1795. With this, Kamehameha brought Oahu into his united kingdom of Hawaii.
