Going Green in the Maldives

 A fantastic effort has been made in the North Male Atoll where two resorts are doing their best to reverse the effects of global warming. The increasing water temperatures, cause bleaching (which can starve the coral to death) has occurred in seventy percent of the reefs in the Maldives.    

As the Maldives have long been a premier dive destination, programs have been instilled in order to maintain the region’s precious natural habitat. The Banyan Tree on Vabbinfaru and the Angsana Resort & Spa Maldives work to grow and transplant coral, protect sea turtles, educate locals, and even involve resort guests. Guests are invited to attend free education-based seminars and divers can even plant new coral gardens on the house reefs, as well as remove invasive predators- including the crown of thorns starfish.
